- Dennen’s Victorian Farmhouse: Our experience here, booked through Airbnb, highlighted a slight discrepancy between marketing and reality. Advertised as a stand-alone unit, it functions more as part of a larger bed-and-breakfast. The rooms, though cozy and tastefully decorated, are relatively small, and due to their attached nature, sound can easily carry between units. However, the property’s fruit trees were a delightful feature, adding a rustic charm to the stay. It offers a classic B&B feel for those who appreciate shared spaces and a homelier atmosphere.
- Mendocino Grove: This glamping experience offers a unique way to connect with nature without sacrificing comfort. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the glamping tents are undoubtedly comfortable, providing a cozy retreat under the stars. It stands out as one of the most dog-friendly restaurants we’ve ever encountered, creating a wonderfully inclusive atmosphere for pet owners. We were so impressed, we almost returned two days in a row!

This lesser-known wine region offers a more intimate and often more experimental wine-tasting experience, perfect for those seeking unique varietals and a relaxed atmosphere.

- Preston Farm and Winery (Russian River): Our stop here on the way up to Mendocino was a true highlight. Preston Farm offers more than just wine; it’s a holistic farm experience. We purchased a bottle of their exquisite wine, settled down at one of their picturesque picnic tables, and enjoyed the serene farm atmosphere. Highlights included their delightful rosé and the overall gorgeous property, which exudes a rustic charm. A small note for pet owners: it’s not dog-friendly, so plan accordingly. And a personal anecdote: I had an unexpected encounter with a stinging nettle during our walk, adding a memorable, albeit slightly painful, moment to the visit!
- Navarro Vineyards (Anderson Valley) *: A cornerstone of Anderson Valley wine, Navarro Vineyards offers the delightful bonus of free tastings – a rarity in many California wine regions! The staff here is incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming, eager to share their passion for winemaking. Their wines are not only affordable but consistently fantastic. We particularly enjoyed their Gewürztraminer, a unique and aromatic varietal, and happily brought a bottle home to savor the memories. It’s a must-visit for both value and quality.
- Toulouse Vineyards (Anderson Valley) *: Prepare to be captivated by the absolutely stunning views at Toulouse Vineyards. We discovered Baxter after enjoying one of their bottles at Cafe Beaujolais and sought them out directly. Though they didn’t have the exact bottle we were looking for, the Baxters themselves – the passionate husband-and-wife team behind the operation – were incredibly helpful and engaging. Their dedication to quality shines through in their wines, and we left with a different, but equally delicious, Pinot Noir. It’s a great place to connect with the winemakers and discover hidden gems.
- Penny Lane Farms (Anderson Valley) *: This is a truly unique and highly recommended stop! Penny Lane Farms offers a beautiful property where you can enjoy both wine and cheese tastings. What makes it particularly special is that it’s a working dairy farm, home to charming goats and sheep. If you call in advance, you can even arrange to meet the animals, making it a fantastic experience for families and animal lovers. It’s a delightful blend of agricultural charm and gourmet indulgence.
- Smith Story Wine Cellars (Anderson Valley) *: Known for its fantastic wines, Smith Story also holds a special place in our hearts for its incredibly dog-friendly atmosphere. Our dog, Bodhi, absolutely loves stopping in to visit his canine friend, Sandwich the doodle, who often greets guests.
