If there’s one word that perfectly encapsulates my journey through 2016, it would undoubtedly be “travel.” From the very first week of January, my life transformed into a exhilarating whirlwind of flights, unfamiliar hotels, cozy Airbnbs, and breathtaking new destinations. It was a year that pushed me to my limits, both physically and emotionally, yet opened my eyes to a world of beauty, culture, and adventure I scarcely knew existed. This incredible odyssey, while at times utterly exhausting, was undeniably exhilarating, reshaping my perspective and deepening my appreciation for our diverse planet.

What I’ve cherished most about this extensive year of exploration is the privilege of sharing every experience, every stunning vista, and every unexpected discovery with you, my incredible community. While 2016 presented its share of global challenges and moments that made me question humanity’s choices, I sincerely hope that through my travels, I’ve managed to shine a light on the immense beauty and resilience that exists amidst all the chaos. My passion for travel is deeply personal, almost selfish in its intensity, but if my stories and photographs can inspire even one of you to step outside your comfort zone, embark on a new adventure, or simply explore a corner of the world you’ve always dreamed of, then I consider my mission a resounding success.
Throughout 2016, I was fortunate enough to visit 15 distinct destinations, and I made it a personal goal to document at least 10 of these incredible journeys on the blog. Even more ambitiously, I committed to capturing as many trips as possible on video. To my genuine surprise and immense pride, I actually succeeded in this endeavor – a rare feat for me! (Perhaps a first, even?) This achievement filled me with a sense of accomplishment, and it’s why I’m thrilled to dedicate this post to highlighting the best of The Healthy Maven Travel in 2016. My deepest hope is that this collection of experiences will encourage you to take that leap – book a flight, hop in your car for a spontaneous road trip, or finally turn that long-held dream vacation into a vivid reality. Yes, travel can be stressful, occasionally overwhelming, and sometimes a significant investment, but I promise you, the memories, the growth, and the sheer joy it brings are beyond worth every penny and every moment of effort. Here’s a look back at my top travel destinations and unforgettable moments from 2016:
10. Uruapan, Mexico: The Heart of Avocado Country
In February, I embarked on a fascinating journey to Uruapan, Mexico, often hailed as the “avocado capital of the world,” alongside the wonderful team from Fit Foodie Finds. This trip, sponsored by Avocados from Mexico, offered an unparalleled glimpse into the source of one of our favorite healthy fats. We were welcomed with incredible warmth and generosity by the local farmers, the dedicated packers, and the vibrant community members. Beyond the insights into avocado cultivation, what truly made Uruapan special was the opportunity to explore a region of Mexico that often goes unnoticed by mainstream tourism. It was a refreshing departure from typical resort experiences, offering an authentic cultural immersion. We spent our days learning about sustainable farming practices, sampling incredibly fresh local cuisine, and simply enjoying the genuine hospitality of the people. This lesser-known gem provided a rich tapestry of experiences, proving that true adventure often lies off the beaten path.
9. Wellfit Malibu Wellness Resort: A Refreshing Start to the Year
Kicking off 2016 with a week at the Wellfit Malibu Wellness Resort was precisely the invigorating start I needed. While the weather brought a fair amount of rain during our stay, that certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of myself and my travel companion, Lee. Put us in a room together, and we’re guaranteed to find a way to have fun, rain or shine! The entire team at Wellfit was absolutely incredible, providing a nurturing and supportive environment focused on holistic well-being. From personalized fitness routines and delicious, healthy meals to mindfulness practices and educational workshops, every aspect was designed to rejuvenate both body and mind. I left Malibu not only feeling healthier and more energized but also with a renewed sense of clarity and focus on my personal and professional goals. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of self-care and setting intentions for the year ahead, making it an ideal retreat for anyone seeking a reset.
8. Nantucket: Quintessential New England Charm
Our brief weekend getaway to Nantucket, made possible by Lorissa’s Kitchen, was a delightful escape brimming with quintessential New England charm. Despite the short duration of our visit and some intensely hot weather, we had an absolute blast exploring this iconic island. Nantucket captivates visitors with its cobblestone streets, historic lighthouses, pristine beaches, and charming cedar-shingled homes. Every corner seemed to tell a story of maritime history and serene island life. We savored fresh seafood, wandered through quaint boutiques, and soaked in the laid-back atmosphere that defines this beloved destination. I left with a strong desire to return and spend more time uncovering its hidden gems and experiencing more of its unique character. Nantucket is the perfect destination for a quick, luxurious escape, offering a blend of relaxation and historic exploration that is truly unforgettable.
7. New Orleans, Louisiana: A City Alive with Soul
A long weekend trip to New Orleans with C was an explosion of fun, culture, and unforgettable experiences. Honestly, I question if there’s any other city in the world that exudes such an intoxicating blend of joy, history, and vibrant energy. NOLA is truly one-of-a-kind. The music scene, particularly in the French Quarter and along Frenchmen Street, was absolutely incredible – a constant soundtrack of jazz, blues, and street performers that filled the air with pure magic. And the food? Oh, the food! From mouth-watering beignets at Cafe Du Monde to rich gumbo, savory jambalaya, and fresh oysters, every meal was a culinary adventure. We indulged in the unique flavors of Creole and Cajun cuisine, embraced the city’s lively spirit, and despite needing an IV of green juice by the end of it all, I had absolutely zero regrets. New Orleans isn’t just a place to visit; it’s an experience that awakens your senses and leaves an indelible mark on your soul. It’s a must-visit destination for anyone seeking vibrant nightlife, unparalleled music, and distinctive culinary delights.
6. Badlands National Park, South Dakota: An Unearthly Landscape
Our recent road trip out West included a stop at Badlands National Park in South Dakota, which truly blew me away with its rugged, otherworldly beauty. This trip, despite a minor setback involving totaling our car (a definite “whomp whomp” moment, as they say!), highlighted the incredible resilience of travel and the unexpected wonders you can stumble upon. The Badlands’ striking geological formations – sharp spires, deep canyons, and expansive prairies – create a landscape unlike anything I had ever seen. The vibrant hues of the stratified rock formations shift with the light, offering a constantly evolving spectacle. We explored unique hiking trails, spotted incredible wildlife including bison and bighorn sheep, and felt a profound connection to the raw power of nature. It’s a National Park that often gets overlooked, but its dramatic vistas and serene wilderness make it an absolute must-add to any adventurer’s list. I am already eager to go back and spend more time immersing myself in its captivating grandeur. For nature lovers and photographers, the Badlands offer unparalleled visual opportunities.
5. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico: Colonial Grandeur and Cultural Richness
Following our avocado adventure, the second half of our Mexico trip led us to the enchanting city of San Miguel de Allende for an unforgettable “workcation.” If you’re yearning for a genuine Mexican experience that moves beyond the typical beach party scene of Cancun, San Miguel de Allende is an absolute must-visit. This UNESCO World Heritage site captivated us with its stunning Spanish colonial architecture, vibrant art scene, and a tangible sense of history around every corner. The city’s colorful streets, ornate churches, and bustling markets create an atmosphere of timeless charm. We spent our days exploring art galleries, indulging in exquisite local cuisine, learning about traditional crafts, and simply soaking in the incredibly rich culture. The blend of history, artistry, and culinary delights makes San Miguel de Allende a truly special place. We absolutely fell in love with its elegant beauty and warm, welcoming spirit, proving that Mexico offers a vast array of unique and profound travel experiences.
4. Nassau, Bahamas: Paradise Found with Friends
An incredible trip with friends to Nassau, Bahamas, proved to be the perfect Caribbean getaway. If you’re seeking sun-drenched beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vibrant island culture without venturing too far, the Bahamas is an ideal choice. Nassau offers a fantastic blend of relaxation and excitement, making it a fabulous destination for a group trip. We spent our days basking on pristine sands, snorkeling in the vibrant coral reefs, and exploring the colorful local markets. The Bahamian hospitality was exceptional, and the atmosphere was one of pure, joyful escapism. For those looking for an extra touch of luxury and exclusivity, a stop at Albany Bahamas is highly recommended. We had the opportunity to bunk up for a day there, experiencing world-class amenities and unparalleled service. This trip was a perfect reminder that some of the best travel memories are made when shared with cherished friends, soaking up the sunshine and tropical bliss.
3. Road Trip Through Maine: Coastal Beauty and Culinary Delights
In a true testament to spontaneity, C and I planned and executed an unforgettable road trip through Maine in under 48 hours! Our adventure began with a drive from Toronto, leading us to the rugged and majestic Acadia National Park. Acadia is a natural wonderland, boasting stunning coastal landscapes, granite peaks, and lush forests – a definite must-visit for any nature enthusiast. We hiked invigorating trails, took in breathtaking panoramic views from Cadillac Mountain, and reveled in the park’s serene beauty. Following our time in Acadia, we embarked on a scenic drive down the picturesque Maine coast, eventually arriving in the charming city of Portland. Portland captivated us with its historic architecture, vibrant arts scene, and incredible culinary reputation. A highlight, without a doubt, was visiting The Holy Donut. Trust me when I say, their potato-based donuts are nothing short of life-changing – a perfectly sweet and unique indulgence that alone is worth the trip! This road trip was a perfect blend of natural exploration and urban discovery, showcasing the diverse beauty of the Northeast and cementing Maine as a top travel destination.
2. Banff, Alberta: Canada’s Majestic Mountain Playground
I’ve said it before, and I’ll emphatically say it again: Banff, Alberta, is one of those truly extraordinary places that will forever call you back. It’s not merely a once-in-a-lifetime destination; it’s an “every year place” that continually inspires awe and wonder. Nestled amidst the Canadian Rockies, Banff National Park offers a landscape of unparalleled natural beauty – towering snow-capped peaks, glistening turquoise lakes like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, dense coniferous forests, and an abundance of diverse wildlife. My visit in the fall was particularly magical, with the golden larches contrasting against the evergreen pines and the crisp, invigorating air. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a keen photographer, a winter sports enthusiast, or simply seeking serene natural beauty, Banff has something for everyone in every season. The charming town of Banff itself, with its cozy lodges, unique shops, and delicious restaurants, serves as the perfect base for exploration. I cannot wait to return in 2017 to experience its majestic allure once more, solidifying its place as one of the best travel destinations in Canada and the world.
1. Iceland: A Land of Fire and Ice, Unforgettable Wonders
To declare Iceland my absolute favorite destination of 2016 might sound clichéd, given its rise in popularity, but believe me when I say, it is truly worth every ounce of hype. This Nordic island nation is a land of dramatic contrasts, where fire and ice coexist in a landscape of breathtaking, almost surreal beauty. We visited in June during the summer solstice, experiencing nearly 23 hours of daylight – an incredible advantage that allowed us to pack our days with endless exploration. From the iconic waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss to the geothermal wonders of the Blue Lagoon and the geysers of the Golden Circle, every turn presented a new, awe-inspiring vista. We hiked across black sand beaches, explored glacial lagoons dotted with icebergs, and marveled at the raw power of volcanic landscapes. While we didn’t manage to see absolutely everything on our ambitious itinerary, the trip brought more wonder, adventure, and profound moments than I ever could have imagined. Iceland is a destination that feels like another planet, offering unique experiences that challenge and inspire. If you are to pick just one international destination for your 2017 travels, let it be Iceland. It promises an adventure that will stay with you long after you’ve returned home, making it the ultimate travel experience of the year.
So, what’s next on the horizon for The Healthy Maven Travel? We are actually heading to Guatemala tomorrow, eager to immerse ourselves in its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. Stay tuned for a comprehensive recap of this upcoming adventure, along with more exciting videos and detailed recaps from our epic US road trip last month, which brought us to incredible places like the Badlands and beyond.
2016 was an absolutely wild and fulfilling year, packed with relentless exploration and countless memorable moments. While I’m already eagerly looking forward to another year filled with extraordinary travel experiences in 2017, I’m also hoping to strike a more balanced pace. My aim is to “nest” a bit more, finding joy and adventure closer to home, discovering local gems, and savoring the quiet moments. This balance, I believe, will make future travels even more meaningful. I simply cannot wait to see what new discoveries, challenges, and incredible memories 2017 has in store for us!
