It’s been a remarkable journey since my last travel guide, a period of introspection and realignment with how I share my adventures with you all. While previous guides, like the one for Grand Cayman, focused heavily on meticulous documentation, my approach has evolved. I’ve discovered a crucial balance between truly being present in the moment and capturing the essence of a trip to share with my community. The struggle was real – juggling multiple cameras, seeking the perfect shot, filming videos, and relying on C as my personal photographer often pulled me away from the very experiences I was trying to preserve. It’s a delicate tightrope walk that many content creators will understand.
PIN ME TO ADD TO YOUR BUCKET LIST
This realization prompted a significant shift in my mindset. Perhaps, I was placing unnecessary pressure on myself. Did every travel guide truly require a professionally filmed video? Was it essential to capture every single photograph with my bulky, professional-grade camera? The answer, I discovered during my trip to British Columbia, was a resounding no. Sometimes, we become so engrossed in the pursuit of perfection that we lose sight of what genuinely matters: the authentic experience itself.
So, for my highly anticipated adventure to Vancouver and Whistler, I made a conscious decision to travel differently. I packed my gear but committed to letting my intuition guide what felt right, rather than adhering to a rigid content plan. This approach proved transformative. I returned home not only with a treasure trove of incredible memories to share with you but also with cherished moments that were purely my own, unburdened by the lens. It felt incredibly liberating and truly authentic.
I utilized my phone for spontaneous snaps, my camera for more considered shots, and intentionally left my vlogging camera nestled comfortably in my suitcase. Currently, I’m taking a brief hiatus from video content (though I’ll be back post-wedding celebrations!), and honestly, I couldn’t be happier with this choice for this trip. Though, to be fair, I did capture countless Snapchat videos of C interacting with his adorable baby cousin – moments that truly made my heart swell and are safely tucked away for my personal enjoyment. They’re simply too precious not to keep just for me.
The genesis of this trip was a professional conference in Whistler, which C and I ingeniously extended into a multi-day exploration of Vancouver. This allowed us to connect with his family and spend time with friends. Despite being a born-and-raised Canadian, I had never before visited British Columbia, a fact I found both slightly embarrassing and deeply regrettable, as I instinctively knew I would fall head over heels for this part of the world. My intuition was spot on. Vancouver and Whistler surpassed every expectation, proving to be absolutely breathtaking destinations, and I am already eagerly planning my return.
Now, let’s dive into the details of this unforgettable journey with my comprehensive British Columbia Travel Guide!
WHERE WE STAYED: Unwinding in BC’s Premier Accommodations
Whistler: A Taste of Alpine Luxury
The Four Seasons Whistler – Our stay at the Four Seasons was an absolute dream, made even sweeter by the fact that the conference covered our accommodation. While C and I might not have typically splurged on this level of luxury independently, we certainly weren’t complaining about the experience! The resort exudes elegance and offers unparalleled amenities. We made full use of the indulgent spa facilities, which provided a serene escape after days of exploration, and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor pools and hot tubs, perfect for unwinding amidst the stunning mountain scenery. From the impeccable service to the lavish comfort of the rooms, every detail contributed to an unforgettable stay, making it clear why the Four Seasons is a beacon of alpine hospitality.
Vancouver: Urban Comfort and Strategic Location
The Georgian Court Hotel* – When it came to Vancouver, we secured our accommodation somewhat last minute, snagging a fantastic deal through Hotel Tonight. The Georgian Court proved to be an excellent choice for our urban adventure. Its prime location near the vibrant Yaletown district meant we were perfectly situated to explore many of Vancouver’s attractions on foot or with easy access to public transport. The hotel offered all the essential amenities we needed for a comfortable stay, without any unnecessary frills, providing a clean, welcoming, and practical base for our explorations. If you’re seeking a solid, well-located hotel that offers great value and convenience without being overly extravagant, the Georgian Court Hotel comes highly recommended.
*A quick insider tip: We’ve consistently found incredible deals on accommodations, often saving up to 60%, by booking through Hotel Tonight. WHAT WE DID: Exploring the Best of British Columbia
Whistler: Adventure and Serenity in the Mountains
Ski Whistler – It would be remiss to write a Whistler travel guide without mentioning its world-renowned skiing and snowboarding opportunities. While I personally didn’t hit the slopes this trip, Whistler Blackcomb is consistently rated among the top ski resorts globally, offering an unparalleled winter sports experience. C has skied here multiple times and raves about the extensive terrain, diverse runs, and stunning alpine vistas. For many, the thrill of being dropped at the peak of a majestic mountain and carving down pristine powder is the epitome of a perfect day. While exhilarating, I admit that the idea of sliding down a mountain isn’t quite my cup of tea; I prefer my adventures a bit closer to solid ground!
Head to the Spa – Now, this is truly my definition of a good time! Whistler is not just for adrenaline junkies; it’s also a sanctuary for relaxation. The conference had initially arranged a morning session at the highly acclaimed Spa Scandinave, a Nordic-inspired oasis famous for its hydrotherapy cycles amidst nature. Unfortunately, due to a slight delay in my arrival, it was fully booked. However, based on my previous experiences at other Scandinave spas across Canada, I can confidently say it’s an incredible, rejuvenating escape. Not to be deterred, we instead indulged in the luxurious Spa at the Four Seasons, and let me tell you, it was an absolutely exquisite experience – no complaints whatsoever about that alternative!
Visit the Olympic Village – Immerse yourself in the legacy of the 2010 Winter Olympics by visiting Whistler’s Olympic Village. It’s more than just a historical site; it’s a vibrant hub where you can wander through charming little shops, admire the iconic Olympic rings, and soak in the breathtaking views of the majestic Blackcomb Mountain looming overhead. It offers a wonderful blend of history, retail therapy, and natural beauty.
Walk around the Village – While some might find Whistler Village a tad touristy or “kitschy,” it undeniably possesses a unique charm and is well worth exploring on foot. The pedestrian-only village is a maze of cobblestone pathways lined with a diverse array of shops, from high-end boutiques to souvenir stores, and countless restaurants and pubs perfect for that essential “Apres Ski” experience, whether you actually skied or not. It’s a lively atmosphere, especially in the evenings, offering plenty of opportunities for people-watching and soaking up the alpine resort vibe.
Vancouver: Urban Charm Meets Natural Wonders
Granville Island – Our excursion to Granville Island was an absolute highlight of our Vancouver visit. This peninsula, connected by bridge and accessible via charming little ferries, is a vibrant public market and cultural hub. We spent several delightful hours exploring the bustling Public Market, a foodie’s paradise brimming with fresh produce, gourmet treats, and artisan goods. Beyond the market, the island is dotted with unique artisan shops, art galleries, and studios, making it a perfect spot to wander, discover local crafts, and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Taking the Aquabus ferry across False Creek added an extra layer of fun to the experience, though it’s also easily accessible by car or public transit.
Walk Around Stanley Park – Stanley Park isn’t just a park; it’s an expansive, magnificent urban oasis, larger than New York’s Central Park, offering a profound connection to nature right within the city. What truly amazed me was how the intricate network of trails made it feel as though we were deep within a vast wilderness, far removed from the urban sprawl. The park beautifully showcases the diverse flora and fauna of the Pacific Northwest, with towering old-growth trees, vibrant gardens, and stunning viewpoints. I could have easily spent three full days exploring its myriad paths, discovering hidden gems, and simply soaking in the tranquility. Don’t miss the famous Totem Poles, a cultural highlight within the park.
Vancouver Seawall – Many locals recommended running or biking the Vancouver Seawall, an impressive paved pathway that encircles Stanley Park and extends for miles along the city’s waterfront. While biking is a popular choice, my aversion to cycling combined with the forecast for rain led us to opt for a leisurely walk – and it was an excellent decision! We began our scenic stroll at English Bay, a popular sandy beach, and meandered along the picturesque coastline to Third Beach, eventually weaving our way deeper into the lush trails of Stanley Park. It was the absolute perfect way to spend a sun-drenched (or even slightly misty) afternoon, offering continuous panoramic views of the ocean, mountains, and city skyline.
WHERE WE ATE: A Culinary Journey Through BC
Whistler: Fueling Alpine Adventures with Deliciousness
The Green Moustache – Every healthy traveler needs their go-to spot, and The Green Moustache is Whistler’s premier destination for wholesome, organic, and plant-based fare. This vibrant juice bar and cafe offers delicious, quick, and nutritious options, perfect for topping up on green juice, enjoying a revitalizing smoothie, or grabbing a healthy meal. I tried their Kitchari upon recommendation, and it was incredibly satisfying and flavourful – my only regret was not indulging in one of their tempting desserts!
Sidecut – Located within the Four Seasons, Sidecut is an exceptional dining experience. Renowned for its prime cuts of steak and fresh seafood, the quality of ingredients and culinary execution here are truly outstanding. While it can be a pricier option, a clever tip is to ask to be seated in the lounge area. You’ll still enjoy the same incredible quality and impeccable service but at a potentially more accessible price point. The sophisticated ambiance makes it perfect for a memorable dinner.
Naked Sprout – Similar to The Green Moustache, Naked Sprout caters to those seeking organic, healthy, and often plant-based options in Whistler. This time, I made sure not to miss out on dessert! Their Mint, Goji, and Spirulina bar was utterly insane – a burst of refreshing flavour and healthy goodness. It’s an excellent spot for smoothies, a quick, energizing bite, or a guilt-free sweet treat.
Araxi – For a touch of upscale dining and an unbeatable happy hour experience, Araxi is a must-visit. This award-winning restaurant is celebrated for its exquisite Pacific Northwest cuisine, particularly its fresh oysters. Need I say more than “happy hour oysters”? It’s the perfect way to enjoy some of the finest local seafood in a sophisticated setting without breaking the bank.
Mongolie Grill – If you’re looking for a customizable, interactive, and satisfying meal, Mongolie Grill is a fantastic choice. While it might be part of a chain, its concept of building your own bowl with a vast array of fresh vegetables, meats (or plant-based alternatives), and sauces makes it unique. We stumbled upon it for lunch, and it proved to be a perfect, affordable, and incredibly fresh meal, allowing us to load up on delicious veggies exactly how we liked them.
Vancouver: A Culinary Paradise
*A personal note: The food scene in Vancouver is nothing short of phenomenal. Seriously, it’s that good! While we enjoyed a lovely home-cooked meal with C’s cousins one evening, for the most part, we dined out for nearly every meal of our trip. If delicious food were your sole reason for visiting Vancouver, rest assured, you would have made an excellent decision. Prepare your taste buds for an unforgettable culinary adventure!
Chambar – Two key observations about Vancouver’s dining scene: brunch and waffles are incredibly popular! We initially tried to get into other popular brunch spots like Medina and Jam Cafe, but the lengthy waits proved to be a blessing in disguise, leading us to Chambar. This Belgian-inspired restaurant was absolutely incredible, and their brunch was truly to-die-for. The vibrant atmosphere and exquisite dishes made for a memorable morning. And seriously, if anyone can explain why virtually every restaurant in Vancouver serves waffles, please enlighten me – I’m genuinely curious!
Beach Bay Cafe – This charming spot was the perfect find after our extensive walk through Stanley Park. With its stunning waterfront views, it provided an idyllic setting for a relaxing late afternoon meal. We ordered a selection of their Happy Hour appetizers and enjoyed some local beers. Everything was exceptionally fresh, beautifully prepared, and utterly delicious. The seafood, in particular, was outstanding, reflecting the restaurant’s commitment to local ingredients. I highly recommend it for a casual yet refined dining experience with a view.
Yaletown Distillery – If you’re searching for an exceptional cocktail experience in a trendy, vibrant setting, Yaletown Distillery is the place to be. While it’s certainly on the pricier side and caters to a chic crowd, the quality of the cocktails is unparalleled. The mixologists craft innovative and perfectly balanced drinks that are truly works of art. It’s an ideal spot for a sophisticated evening out, whether you’re starting your night or just enjoying some high-quality libations.
Minami – Prepare yourself: dining at Minami was, without hyperbole, one of the best meals of my entire life. This restaurant specializes in Aburi (flame-seared) sushi, a technique that lightly sears the fish, adding an incredible depth of flavor and a unique texture. The sushi here is beyond incredible. My absolute top recommendation, without question, is the Salmon Oshi Sushi – it’s so extraordinary that you’ll want to order it at least three more times. My only regret from our entire trip is not having eaten every single meal at Minami. It’s a culinary experience you simply cannot miss in Vancouver!
Essential Travel Tips for Your British Columbia Adventure
Beyond where to stay, what to do, and where to eat, here are a few practical insights to enhance your British Columbia experience:
- Transportation in Vancouver: No Ride-Sharing Services – One aspect that genuinely surprised and at times frustrated me was the absence of Uber or Lyft in Vancouver during our visit. This means you’ll likely rely on traditional taxis for convenient transportation, which can definitely add up in cost. The good news is that most taxis accept credit cards, so you don’t always need to carry cash. Plan your routes and budget accordingly, perhaps leveraging Vancouver’s efficient public transit system (SkyTrain, bus, SeaBus) for longer distances.
- Seamless Travel from Vancouver Airport to Whistler – For those heading directly from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Whistler, there’s a convenient and direct bus service available. The journey typically costs around $60 each way and offers a comfortable ride through stunning scenery. While we had a conference-arranged shuttle, C utilized this service on his way up and reported that it was incredibly easy to navigate, with pick-up points clearly marked in the International Departures area.
- Pack a Rain Coat: Embrace the West Coast Weather – British Columbia, especially Vancouver, is known for its often-rainy climate. Packing a reliable rain jacket is not just advisable; it’s practically essential for staying comfortable and dry while exploring. While many hotels offer complimentary umbrellas, a good raincoat provides more freedom and protection, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors regardless of the weather. Don’t let a little rain deter you; it’s part of the authentic West Coast experience!
- Extend Your Stay for More Exploration – We only had a whirlwind 48 hours to soak in Vancouver, which meant our focus was primarily on urban exploration and, of course, the incredible food scene. If you’re fortunate enough to have more time, I highly recommend venturing out of the city center to explore the surrounding natural beauty. British Columbia is a hiker’s paradise, with countless trails offering breathtaking mountain views, lush forests, and serene lakes just a short drive away. Options like Grouse Mountain, Lynn Canyon Park, or even a day trip to Squamish offer fantastic outdoor adventures.
- Prepare for an Amazing Time! – Honestly, British Columbia, encompassing both the vibrant city of Vancouver and the majestic alpine resort of Whistler, completely blew me away. The combination of stunning natural landscapes, dynamic urban culture, and exceptional culinary experiences made for an unforgettable trip. I absolutely adored it and am eagerly anticipating my next visit to this incredible province!
