Our Dream Honeymoon: A Luxurious Escape to Sonoma and Napa Valley

This post is undoubtedly the one I’ve been most eager to share: the story of our unforgettable honeymoon to Sonoma and Napa Valley. Planning a wedding can be incredibly demanding, and honestly, the months leading up to our big day were so consumed with details that the honeymoon felt like an afterthought. C and I adore traveling, and our bucket list features grand adventures like New Zealand. We initially envisioned a sprawling, far-flung destination honeymoon, brimming with both thrilling activities and serene relaxation.

New Zealand had always topped our list, and we assumed that’s where we’d go. However, extensive research consistently pointed to January through March as the ideal travel window for NZ. This meant postponing our honeymoon for nearly a year after the wedding. Given the considerable stress we were already under, the idea of waiting wasn’t entirely unappealing; it offered a much-needed reprieve from immediate decision-making. Yet, a more pressing need emerged: a chance to truly unwind and reconnect immediately after the wedding.

Choosing a Sonoma and Napa Honeymoon: An Unexpected Perfect Match

Instead of delaying, we chose an immediate, local escape: a week-long Sonoma and Napa honeymoon. We initially dubbed it a “minimoon,” almost dismissing it because it was merely an hour’s drive from home. How wrong we were! Our experience taught us a profound lesson: a honeymoon isn’t defined by distance or duration. It’s about disconnecting, celebrating your new chapter, and finding joy together. This local wine country getaway proved to be everything we needed, offering a blend of familiar comfort and luxurious indulgence without the added stress of international travel.

Our week in Sonoma and Napa was, in every sense, a dream come true. As frequent visitors to California’s renowned wine country, we’re well-acquainted with its charm. The opportunity to immerse ourselves for a full week, indulging in cherished activities within such a comforting and homey environment, revealed itself as the honeymoon we never knew we desired. It was truly as perfect as perfect gets, allowing us to shed the wedding planning stress and fully embrace marital bliss.

Luxurious Serenity in Sonoma: Our Stay at Farmhouse Inn

I knew instinctively that C and I would need a nearby escape immediately after the wedding to decompress and process the whirlwind of events. My mind instantly conjured the perfect spot: Farmhouse Inn in Forestville, Sonoma County. A few years prior, we’d spent a magical night there, and the desire to return had lingered ever since. Thus, when post-wedding plans came up, booking Farmhouse Inn was a non-negotiable.

Farmhouse Inn is nothing short of spectacular, epitomizing luxury Sonoma resorts. Each room is a masterpiece of “farmhouse chic” design, blending rustic charm with sophisticated elegance. The property also boasts a Michelin Star restaurant, offering an unparalleled culinary journey right at your doorstep. Nestled in the heart of wine country, it serves as an idyllic haven for both serene relaxation and as a strategic base for exploring local attractions. We embraced a delightful mix of both during our stay, finding the perfect rhythm between indulgence and adventure.

Our days at Farmhouse Inn were filled with pure indulgence. I made the most of the exquisite homemade bath products, soaking in rejuvenating baths as often as possible. C enjoyed the refreshing pool and hot tub, and together, we savored the daily wine tastings and exceptional local cuisine. Every meal, whether an intimate dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant or a leisurely breakfast in bed, contributed to an experience that was truly flawless. Farmhouse Inn has etched a permanent, cherished spot in our hearts, defining what a truly relaxing and romantic Napa getaway (and Sonoma, of course!) can be.

Beyond the blissful haven of the inn, we dedicated an afternoon to exploring the charming town of Sebastopol, browsing antique shops in quaint local towns, and enjoying some delightful wine tasting. A must-visit was SHED in Healdsburg, one of my absolute favorite spots, where we always find unique treasures. We also embarked on an insightful ranch tour at Medlock Ames, an organic winery in Geyserville, which offered a fascinating glimpse into sustainable winemaking. Crucially, we allowed ourselves ample time for simply doing nothing, completely unplugging from the world. This blend of gentle exploration and profound rest was absolutely amazing.

If you’re considering your own Sonoma adventure, I’d love to share a dedicated post on my favorite restaurants, shops, and wineries in the area. Let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in!

Exploring Napa Valley: Our Stay at Indian Springs Calistoga

While we could have happily spent the remainder of our honeymoon (or perhaps, the rest of our lives) at Farmhouse Inn, budget realities eventually called. After several blissful days, we packed our bags and journeyed to Calistoga in Napa Valley for a few more nights, checking into Indian Springs.

I’ll be candid: any accommodation following the unparalleled luxury of Farmhouse Inn was bound to face a tough comparison. So, while it wasn’t entirely Indian Springs’ fault, there was a slight initial let-down, primarily concerning our room. A crucial tip for future guests: avoid booking the lodge rooms unless basic accommodations are all you seek. The picturesque images commonly seen online tend to showcase other, more premium room types. The lodge, though perfectly clean and functional, lacked the charming or romantic ambiance we had anticipated. I’m perhaps being a bit of a “diva” here, but honesty is key for a comprehensive Napa honeymoon review.

Despite the room’s minor shortcomings, our overall stay at Indian Springs was genuinely enjoyable. It’s a uniquely captivating place, centered around a massive communal hot spring pool that evokes a nostalgic, almost cinematic vibe straight out of a 1950s Pepsi commercial. The spa facilities are equally impressive, providing a serene sanctuary for a day of relaxation. I indulged in the famous mud baths, which offered a truly distinctive spa experience. While I wished the mud bath portion of the circuit was longer than 15 minutes, it’s an experience I highly recommend for anyone seeking something truly different among Calistoga spa hotels.

Calistoga itself is incredibly charming. Even a day trip is worthwhile; it’s small enough to explore in a few hours, though antique enthusiasts might linger longer. C and I unearthed some fantastic finds in the local shops and fell in love with the town’s quaint atmosphere. The wine here, predictably, is delicious, but we generally gravitate towards the more relaxed tasting vibe in Sonoma. We only visited one winery, Brian Arden, which boasted a beautiful property and excellent wine. However, the cost was difficult to justify, especially when equally delicious wines are available just 30 minutes away in Sonoma. It became pretty clear we’re firmly on #TeamSonoma!

However, if your California honeymoon takes you to Calistoga, be sure to visit: ROAM antique shop for unique finds, Lovina for a delightful brunch (owned by the same team as Zazie in SF), Sam’s Social Club for a memorable dinner, and consider dining at Solbar at Solage Calistoga – a truly exceptional experience (if you manage to stay at Solage, you’re winning at life!).

Winding Down in Guerneville: A Relaxed Sonoma Valley Conclusion

With two nights remaining in our wine country honeymoon before returning to San Francisco, we deliberately left our plans open. There was a chance we’d feel ready to head home, but also the possibility of extending our blissful escape. Ultimately, we experienced a delightful blend of both.

Close friends with a house in Guerneville, also in Sonoma, graciously offered their place to us for those final two nights. We gladly accepted, and it proved to be the perfect conclusion to our trip. Having access to a home allowed us to cook our own meals and truly “nest,” offering a gentle transition before fully re-entering society. This stay also finally enabled us to explore Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, a long-desired adventure that had been postponed due to trail restrictions for dogs (our Bodhi always in tow!). Walking among those majestic ancient redwoods was an awe-inspiring experience we won’t soon forget.

And speaking of local delights, waking up each morning to fresh biscuits from Big Bottom Market became a highlight – a lifelong dream I’d happily make an everyday reality! There’s a very good reason why they’re famously one of Oprah’s favorites; their biscuits are truly exceptional.

Beyond our forest explorations and culinary delights, we spent our remaining time doing more antiquing (we’re officially embracing our “old souls” status!), catching up on way too many TV shows, and most importantly, simply resting our minds. This invaluable period of quiet introspection and relaxation was the ideal preparation before re-engaging with the demands of everyday life. It truly was perfect.

Embracing Our Backyard Bliss: The Perfect California Honeymoon

On Sunday morning, with refreshed spirits, we packed our car and made the hour-long drive back home. Our Sonoma and Napa honeymoon was the unexpected gem we never realized we needed, surpassing every hope and expectation we could have had. This experience underscored a profound sense of gratitude for my incredible partner and for the immense privilege we have to explore these magnificent places, which we so lovingly call our backyard.

This post marks the final chapter in our wedding recap series. It brings me immense joy to have shared this journey with you, creating a virtual diary to cherish and reflect upon in the years ahead. As we close this beautiful chapter, we eagerly open a new one, embracing the adventures that married life brings. C and I are deeply thankful for the outpouring of support as we’ve embarked on this next step, even if married life feels wonderfully familiar! We can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. Stay tuned for more adventures!
