Dreams truly do come true, especially when they involve a deep dive into the lush heartland of your favorite superfood. Imagine being invited to Uruapan, Mexico, a place renowned globally as the ultimate avocado capital. For an avocado enthusiast like me, this wasn’t just a trip; it was a profound pilgrimage, an opportunity to connect with the very essence of a fruit that has revolutionized my diet, enriched my skincare routine, and completely reshaped my perspective on healthy fats. This journey wasn’t merely about discovery; it was about experiencing the vibrant culture and dedicated craftsmanship behind every creamy, green bite.

My passion for avocados runs deep. They are more than just a food item; they are a cornerstone of a balanced lifestyle, offering essential nutrients and healthy fats that have transformed my relationship with food. So, when the incredible team at Avocados from Mexico – Canada extended an invitation to visit Michoacán, the Mexican state where Uruapan is nestled, I didn’t just say yes; I quite possibly squealed with uncontainable joy. Their mission, to encourage more Canadians to embrace the delicious and nutritious avocado, perfectly aligns with my own, making this partnership a natural and exciting collaboration. This expedition was designed to uncover the secrets of avocado cultivation, from the fertile soil to your breakfast table, answering the burning question: “Where do avocados truly come from?”
The adventure was made even more special by the company of my dear friends, Lee and Linley, collectively known as Team Fit Foodie. Together, we embarked on an immersive exploration that promised to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Michoacán, with its unique microclimates and rich volcanic soil, provides the perfect canvas for growing what many consider the world’s finest avocados. Our journey would take us deep into the heart of this agricultural marvel, revealing not just the production process, but also the vibrant community and rich heritage that sustain it. Every moment in Uruapan was an education, a celebration, and a testament to the dedication of those who bring this beloved fruit to our tables.

Unveiling the Secrets of Organic Cultivation at Rancho Milpillas
Our adventure began at Rancho Milpillas, a truly remarkable organic avocado farm, where the air was thick with the scent of rich earth and thriving foliage. It’s an astonishing fact that approximately 50% of the world’s avocados hail from Uruapan, Mexico. This remarkable statistic isn’t mere coincidence; it’s a direct result of Uruapan’s incredibly unique and favorable climate. The region boasts an optimal blend of abundant sunshine, timely rainfall, and cool nights, coupled with significant weather variations that create an ideal environment for avocado trees to flourish and bear fruit year-round. This delicate balance allows for multiple harvests throughout the year, ensuring a steady supply of this beloved fruit to global markets.

At Rancho Milpillas, we had the privilege of meeting Augustin, a third-generation avocado farmer whose wisdom and dedication were truly inspiring. He guided us through the intricate world of organic avocado farming, sharing ancestral knowledge passed down through generations. Augustin meticulously explained the art of tree pruning, a critical practice that ensures healthy growth and optimal fruit production. What truly set his approach apart was his philosophy of cultivating avocados in deep symbiosis with the environment and even the natural rhythms of the planets. This holistic approach emphasizes ecological balance, utilizing natural pest control methods, enriching the soil with organic matter, and respecting the land’s inherent cycles. The farm itself was a breathtaking tableau of vibrant greenery, teeming with life. And, as a delightful surprise, we discovered that avocado treats extend far beyond guacamole, as Augustin proudly offered us a taste of traditional avocado jello – an unexpectedly refreshing and uniquely Michoacán delicacy!

Exploring the Historical Echoes: Paricutín and San Juan Ruins
Beyond its agricultural prowess, Uruapan and its surrounding areas are steeped in fascinating history and natural wonders. Our journey took an intriguing turn as we visited the awe-inspiring Paricutín volcano and the poignant ruins of San Juan Parangaricutiro. The story of Paricutín is one of nature’s raw power: a volcano that erupted suddenly in 1943 from a cornfield, growing rapidly and eventually burying two towns, Paricutín and San Juan, under a sea of molten lava and volcanic ash. This geological phenomenon captivated the world and continues to be a powerful reminder of our planet’s dynamic forces.

Today, all that visibly remains of the once-thriving town of San Juan are parts of its resilient church, its steeple and altar defiantly rising from the solidified volcanic landscape. Climbing the soft, shifting volcanic ash to reach these ruins was an experience both humbling and exhilarating. The desolate, otherworldly landscape, punctuated by the ancient stone structures, painted a vivid picture of the past, offering a profound sense of connection to the history and geological forces that shaped this region. It was a stark contrast to the lush avocado groves, yet equally vital to understanding the land of Michoacán.
A Taste of Michoacán: Traditional Mexican Cooking Lesson
Our cultural immersion deepened with an unforgettable afternoon spent in a traditional Michoacán kitchen, learning from the immensely talented local chef, Beatriz. Her home was filled with the tantalizing aromas of spices and fresh ingredients, instantly transporting us to the heart of Mexican culinary traditions. Beatriz generously shared her family’s cherished recipes, guiding us through the preparation of several local delicacies. We meticulously learned the secrets to crafting truly authentic guacamole, focusing on simple, fresh ingredients that highlight the avocado’s natural richness. The vibrant avocado salsa, bursting with zesty flavors, was another highlight, offering a fresh perspective on how to incorporate avocados into different dishes.

Beyond familiar favorites, we delved into the intricacies of making tamales and corundas, two staple corn masa dishes. Corundas, distinct from typical tamales, are traditionally triangular and often wrapped in corn leaves, offering a unique texture and flavor profile specific to the Michoacán region. We crowned our culinary session with a magnificent Sopa Caldo, a hearty and flavorful soup brimming with fresh local vegetables, tender meat, and, of course, generously topped with our freshly made corundas and creamy slices of avocado. The cooking lesson was not just about food; it was a vibrant immersion into Michoacán’s heritage, complete with spirited conversations and perhaps a few celebratory Mezcal shots, adding an extra layer of authentic Mexican warmth to our unforgettable afternoon.
The Science of Green Gold: Amadeo Teytud Avocado Greenhouse
The following day brought us to the Amadeo Teytud Avocado Greenhouse, an experience that proved to be the most educational and scientifically enlightening part of our entire trip. Here, we gained an invaluable understanding of how avocado trees are meticulously cultivated and prepared before being sold to farms for commercial fruit production. The insights into plant genetics and horticultural techniques were truly fascinating and demystified many aspects of avocado growth.
Did you know there are three primary types of avocados? We learned about Criollo, Hass, and Mendez. The Criollo variety, native to Mexico, typically has a thinner skin and a lower oil content, making its taste less optimal for commercial sale. Consequently, you will rarely find Criollo avocados in stores. However, the Hass and Mendez varieties are the two most common and beloved types globally, prized for their rich, creamy texture and superior flavor.

A key takeaway from the greenhouse visit was the critical technique of grafting. We observed how Hass or Mendez plant scions are skillfully grafted onto Criollo rootstock. This ingenious horticultural method allows farmers to leverage the robust root system and natural resilience of the Criollo plant, while simultaneously benefiting from the superior fruit quality – the exceptional creaminess and delightful taste – of the Hass or Mendez varieties. This ensures that the avocado trees grown for commercial purposes are not only hardy and disease-resistant but also produce the high-quality, delicious avocados consumers expect. Having gained such in-depth knowledge, I’m now jokingly certified as an “avocado scientist” – just saying, if you ever need expert consultation on avocado grafting, I might just be your person!
The Bustling Heart: Exploring Uruapan Market
No trip to the heart of an agricultural region is complete without a visit to its local market, and the Uruapan Market did not disappoint. It was a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and aromas, a true sensory feast. The market buzzed with activity, locals and vendors interacting amidst stalls overflowing with an astonishing variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and regional delicacies. The vibrant colors of exotic produce, the rhythmic chatter of merchants, and the rich scents of spices and ripe fruit created an intoxicating atmosphere that truly captured the essence of daily life in Uruapan.

Naturally, avocados were everywhere, in staggering abundance. From small, perfectly ripe specimens to larger varieties, they were piled high in every stall. The sheer volume and incredibly low prices were almost enough to bring a tear to my eye, knowing the cost back home. If only international travel allowed for smuggling copious amounts of fresh, cheap avocados! We eagerly picked up some local goodies, savoring the experience of choosing direct from the source. This market visit wasn’t just about shopping; it was a deeper connection to the local economy and the daily lives of the people who cultivate and appreciate this incredible fruit.
From Farm to Fork: Inside Empaque RV Avocado Packer
Our immersive journey culminated at Empaque RV, an advanced avocado packing facility, providing a fascinating glimpse into the final, critical stages of avocado distribution. Donning rather stylish hairnets, we stepped into a world of precision and efficiency. Witnessing the sheer scale and meticulous process involved in preparing avocados for global export was one of the most impressive sights of the entire trip. It truly put into perspective the immense amount of work, rigorous inspection, and dedicated care that goes into delivering each perfectly ripe avocado from the farm to your kitchen table.

Each avocado undergoes an extensive process of sorting and quality control. They are carefully inspected for size, ripeness, and any imperfections, ensuring that only the finest fruits make it to market. Once sorted, they are meticulously packed, often in single layers to prevent bruising, and then prepared for their long journey. The logistics are astounding: every single avocado has a carefully planned route, destined for specific markets around the world. The team at Empaque RV has mastered the art and science of optimizing freshness and preserving the delicate taste and quality, even during the extensive transit from Uruapan all the way to Canada. Seeing this diligent process firsthand eased any guilt I might have felt about my weekly avocado consumption. Knowing that I’m not only supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs but also an industry that genuinely cares for its workers and the integrity of its product makes every purchase feel even more meaningful. I truly wish everyone could witness this incredible operation firsthand – and for a glimpse, the video provides an excellent summary!
