Capturing Our Love & Starting Our Wedding Planning Adventure

From a young age, many girls envision their perfect wedding day, complete with elaborate details and fairytale romance. Interestingly, I was never one of them. The grand spectacle of a wedding never quite captured my imagination. It wasn’t until I met C, and our connection grew so profound that the prospect of a shared future became a beautiful certainty, that I even began to entertain the idea of marriage. Even then, my excitement wasn’t centered on the ‘wedding’ itself, but rather the profound and lasting commitment of ‘marriage’. This distinction has profoundly shaped our journey to the altar, prioritizing the essence of our union over traditional celebrations.

Our relationship with C has always felt deeply committed, even before any formal declarations. After six wonderful years together, a significant milestone by any measure, we found ourselves naturally gravitating towards making our bond official. The terms “boyfriend” and “girlfriend,” while once fitting, no longer accurately reflected the depth, history, and unwavering commitment we shared. We were, in every practical sense, already life partners. This piece of paper, a legal formality, simply serves to acknowledge what our hearts and daily lives already declared. The decision to wait, to truly build a strong foundation, felt incredibly right. Moving to this next phase, though it changes virtually nothing about the core of our relationship, feels like a meaningful and appropriate step forward, solidifying a bond that has long been unbreakable.

So, indeed, you could say my prevailing sentiment was a vibrant case of marriage fever, rather than the more common wedding fever. This perspective allowed us to approach the planning process with a unique clarity, focusing on what truly mattered to us as a couple and what would best celebrate our journey.

Navigating the Wedding Planning Journey: From Ideas to Intentional Celebration

Once the initial euphoria of our engagement gently subsided, the practical reality of planning a wedding presented itself. To be candid, I wasn’t instantly enthusiastic about diving into the intricate world of wedding logistics. C and I sat down to discuss our desires, and in that initial brainstorming session, we tossed around nearly two dozen different concepts, each sounding equally appealing in its own way. Our ideas ranged from an intimate civil ceremony at City Hall, embracing simplicity and legal formality, to an elaborate wine country extravaganza, complete with picturesque vineyards and gourmet dining. Every option, from minimalist to grand, seemed to hold its own charm.

However, amidst this whirlwind of possibilities, a profound realization emerged. While C and I celebrate our connection and our fortune in finding each other every single day, life offers precious few opportunities to gather all the cherished people in our lives in one singular space to celebrate them. Our wedding, we decided, wasn’t just about us; it was a rare chance to honor the community of family and friends who have supported, loved, and shaped us individually and as a couple. This perspective became our guiding star, providing a deeper meaning to the entire undertaking.

Despite this beautiful revelation, I won’t sugarcoat the experience. The inherent stress and occasional madness that accompanies wedding planning are, at times, overwhelming. The endless decisions, the coordination, the budget considerations—it can all feel like a monumental task. Yet, in those moments of pressure, I consciously remind myself of the extraordinary privilege it is to have such an incredible “crew” of people who are not only willing but genuinely excited to join us in celebrating our union. This collective joy and love transform the planning from a chore into a heartfelt endeavor, making every effort worthwhile.

Embracing Authenticity: A Non-Traditional Approach to Our Big Day

It’s fair to say that C and I are anything but traditionalists when it comes to wedding customs. If there were an antithesis to the stereotypical “bridezilla,” that would undoubtedly be me. My focus isn’t on meticulous, picture-perfect details or conforming to societal expectations. Instead, my paramount concern is ensuring that every person attending our celebration has an genuinely good time, creating lasting, joyful memories. Naturally, this includes decent food and drinks – a fundamental element of any truly enjoyable gathering. We’re currently in the nascent stages of planning, diligently working to secure the perfect venue. For those wondering, we’re setting our sights on somewhere within the vibrant city of San Francisco, aiming for a beautiful Spring 2018 wedding.

Initially, I harbored the notion of a quick engagement, perhaps a few months from proposal to nuptials. That idea, however, quickly evaporated once I began to grasp the sheer volume and complexity of tasks involved in orchestrating a wedding. The planning process has been an eye-opening journey, revealing layers of decisions I hadn’t anticipated. Even something as personal as choosing a wedding dress has become a delightful challenge. I’ve tried on several stunning options and have successfully narrowed them down to two finalists. The decision between them remains elusive; it wouldn’t surprise me if I ultimately resort to the impartial flip of a coin to make the final call, a testament to my relaxed approach.

Throughout this entire process, C and I have made a conscious effort to regularly check in with each other, ensuring we remain aligned on our vision. It’s crucial for us to remember that, at the end of the day, our wedding should be an authentic reflection of us, regardless of whether it aligns with mainstream traditions or expectations. This core principle has guided every decision, big or small. To all my recently engaged readers navigating their own wedding planning journeys, I offer this vital piece of advice: never lose sight of the fact that your wedding is fundamentally about you and your partner. While compromise is an inherent part of any relationship and often necessary in planning such a significant event, don’t be afraid to infuse your personality into every aspect. If your dream involves your beloved dog walking you down the aisle, or if you envision yourself radiant in a non-traditional purple wedding dress, I wholeheartedly say to you: #YOUDOYOU. Embrace your individuality, celebrate your unique love story, and create a day that genuinely resonates with who you are as a couple.

Capturing Our Love Story: An Authentic Engagement Shoot

With that philosophy firmly in mind, I’m thrilled to share some cherished moments from our recent engagement photoshoot. We had the immense fortune of having my dear friend and an incredibly talented photographer, Bettina Bogar, in town staying with us. We truly couldn’t have asked for anyone more perfect to capture this special chapter in our lives. For C and me, the idea of traditional, overly posed pictures in picturesque, unfamiliar neighborhoods never quite resonated. While those photos are beautiful for others, for us, it was about authenticity – again, #youdoyou. We wanted our engagement photos to be a genuine reflection of our life as it is right now, capturing candid moments that speak to our everyday connection and the comfort we share.

The photoshoot itself was as spontaneous and natural as our relationship. One Friday afternoon, around 4:00 PM, with C comfortably passed out on the window seat in our bedroom, I turned to Bettina and casually asked if she’d be up for doing the shoot right then and there. Without hesitation, she agreed. I gently roused C from his nap, told him to get dressed, and then, to inject a little celebratory energy and give us a “photography buzz,” I brewed some fresh coffee. What followed was a wonderfully relaxed and enjoyable 2.5 hours of shooting, capturing us in our most natural state, just being ourselves. It felt less like a formal session and more like an extension of our everyday lives, documented through Bettina’s insightful lens.

As I mentioned, our primary goal was for the session to truly capture the essence of ‘us.’ We began by shooting around our home, a space filled with our shared memories and comforts. These intimate shots in our personal sanctuary perfectly embodied the cozy, loving dynamic of our daily lives. Following the home session, we headed to one of our favorite local spots: Baker Beach. This location holds particular significance for us, as it’s where C and I engage in one of our weekly rituals: letting our beloved dog, Bodhi, run wild on the beach until he’s utterly exhausted, often sleeping for 15 straight hours afterward! This joyous activity is typically capped off with us sharing a beer and soaking in the breathtaking San Francisco sunset. These moments, filled with laughter, companionship, and the serene beauty of the natural world, are the true reflections of our happiness and connection, and Bettina captured them with unparalleled artistry. For the first time, seeing these incredible, authentic images, I found myself genuinely excited not just about the marriage, but about the wedding planning process itself, understanding that it’s all part of celebrating our unique story.

All photos are courtesy of the amazingly talented Bettina Bogar, who truly brought our vision to life. Be sure to check out her stunning portfolio here or follow her incredible work on Instagram here for more inspiration and beautiful imagery.

Just a friendly heads up for my wonderful readers: I’ll be taking a brief hiatus from all my usual posting routines – both here on the blog, on YouTube, and on the podcast – for the next week or so. C and I are embarking on an exciting adventure to Alaska with his family, and I’m determined to use this time to truly unplug, recharge my batteries, and immerse myself fully in quality moments with the people I love. It’s an important reminder to step away from the digital world and connect with what truly matters. I’ll be back before you know it, refreshed and ready to share more. Until then, I encourage you all to go out and truly LIVE! Sending lots of love and good vibes your way <3
