What an absolutely unforgettable journey! If you’ve been following my adventures on Facebook, you might already be aware of the minor curveball thrown our way when my laptop and wallet decided to embark on their own unscheduled adventure. Yes, it happened, it was certainly a low point, but honestly, the sheer joy and incredible experiences that followed far outweighed any initial frustration. The highs of this trip were so exhilarating that the lows quickly faded into insignificance.
An Epic San Francisco & Bay Area Thanksgiving Getaway
My partner, C, and I embarked on a much-anticipated journey to San Francisco and its enchanting surrounding areas. Our primary mission was to reconnect with cherished friends and family, and, most importantly, to celebrate the festive spirit of Thanksgiving in a truly spectacular fashion. The Bay Area, with its unique blend of urban sophistication, natural beauty, and unparalleled culinary scene, promised an adventure of a lifetime, and it delivered on every front.
Attempting to encapsulate the entirety of our San Francisco and Bay Area escapade within a single blog post feels like an impossible feat. Each day was brimming with such diverse activities, breathtaking sights, and delightful encounters that a comprehensive recap would easily transform this article into a full-length novel. Instead, I’ve decided to let the vibrant photographs do most of the storytelling, allowing you to visually immerse yourself in the beauty of our trip. It’s quite ironic, actually, that despite my culinary focus, I captured surprisingly few pictures of the delicious meals themselves. I’m still not quite sure how that happened amidst all the excitement!
Kicking Off Our Bay Area Adventure: Ferry Building and Rooftop Revelry
Our San Francisco adventure began on a lively Saturday morning, where we met up with one of my oldest and dearest friends, Eseids. We immediately immersed ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the renowned Ferry Building Farmer’s Market. This iconic marketplace is a feast for the senses, bustling with local vendors offering an incredible array of fresh produce, artisanal goods, gourmet foods, and tempting treats. The air was filled with the tantalizing aromas of freshly baked bread, exotic spices, and brewing coffee, creating an invigorating start to our day. We perused the stalls, soaking in the local culture and enjoying the lively chatter that filled the historic halls.
Following our delightful market exploration, we made our way to Cassie’s apartment for an afternoon of relaxing drinks and delectable munchies on her stunning rooftop. And when I say stunning, I truly mean it. The panoramic vista from Cassie’s roof was simply unparalleled, offering an unobstructed, postcard-perfect view of the majestic Bay Bridge glistening under the California sun. It was the quintessential San Francisco experience, a moment of pure bliss, sipping refreshing beverages with good company and an iconic backdrop. This view alone set a high standard for the breathtaking scenery we would encounter throughout our trip.
A Delicious Day Trip to Sonoma Wine Country
No visit to Northern California would be complete without venturing into its world-famous wine country, and so, we embarked on a delightful day trip to Sonoma. The drive itself was a scenic marvel, winding through rolling hills adorned with lush vineyards, creating an idyllic prelude to our wine-tasting adventures. Sonoma Valley offers a more relaxed and rustic charm compared to its Napa neighbor, making it perfect for an unhurried exploration of its esteemed wineries.
Our first stop was the absolutely incredible Scribe Winery. Nestled amidst breathtaking landscapes, Scribe offers an experience that goes far beyond mere wine tasting. It’s a sensory journey, with an emphasis on the connection between land, wine, and community. The staff provided truly wonderful service, guiding us through their exquisite selection of wines while sharing fascinating insights into their philosophy and winemaking process. The atmosphere was serene and welcoming, making it an unforgettable stop. It truly lives up to its reputation for offering a unique, holistic approach to viticulture and hospitality.
Next, we visited Cline Winery, which boasts a truly beautiful property. Their expansive grounds are meticulously maintained, featuring picturesque gardens, serene ponds, and even a natural habitat for a variety of birds. What truly impressed us here was not only the quality of their wines but also their incredibly generous offering of free tastings, a rarity in wine country. It allowed us to sample a wide range of their varietals in a relaxed, enjoyable setting. We then made our way to Larson Family Winery, known for its laid-back, family-friendly vibe. Here, alongside indulging in more delicious wine, we even tried our hand at a game of “bags” (cornhole). It quickly became apparent that my skills lie far more in the realm of wine appreciation than competitive throwing, a realization that, frankly, came as no surprise!
Coastal Wonders: Hiking Point Reyes & Fresh Oysters in Tomales Bay
Our journey through the Bay Area also took us to the rugged and stunning Point Reyes National Seashore. This truly spectacular destination offers some of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in California. We embarked on an exhilarating hike, winding through diverse terrain that offered breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean crashing against dramatic cliffs, expansive beaches, and verdant rolling hills. The crisp ocean air invigorated our senses, and the serene beauty of nature surrounded us. It was during this hike that we had the incredible fortune of encountering wild elk, majestic creatures grazing peacefully in their natural habitat. Observing these animals up close in such a pristine environment was a truly magical moment and a powerful reminder of the rich biodiversity of the region.
Following our invigorating hike, we headed to Tomales Bay, an estuary renowned for its incredibly fresh oysters. Our visit to Tomales Bay Oyster Company was a highlight, offering a hands-on culinary experience that was both fun and utterly delicious. We gathered with friends, learning the art of oyster shucking – a skill that’s more challenging (and rewarding!) than it looks. Once shucked, we fired up the grill and cooked these briny delights to perfection. There’s nothing quite like the taste of freshly shucked and grilled oysters, enjoyed outdoors with good company and the serene backdrop of Tomales Bay. It’s an experience that truly connects you to the local environment and its bounty. My recommendation? Bring your favorite drinks and some complementary snacks, set up shop for the afternoon, and savor the freshest oysters you’ll ever eat.
A Bountiful Thanksgiving in Marin
The centerpiece of our trip was, without a doubt, the magnificent Thanksgiving celebration held in Marin. It was a truly grand affair, bringing together 24 joyous people around a table overflowing with love, laughter, and an unbelievable spread of food. The culinary highlight of the evening, apart from the perfectly roasted turkey and an array of comforting side dishes, had to be the dessert table, boasting an astonishing ten homemade pies! From classic pumpkin and apple to more unique creations, each pie was a testament to the warmth and generosity of our hosts. The air was filled with chatter, clinking glasses, and the heartwarming sounds of family and friends reconnecting.
To help digest the incredible feast and make room for those ten glorious pies, we embarked on a refreshing post-meal hike. This Thanksgiving hike, taken between the main course and dessert, was a brilliant idea. It offered a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Marin landscape, breathe in the fresh air, and engage in more relaxed conversations while surrounded by nature’s splendor. It was the perfect interlude, allowing us to appreciate the beauty of our surroundings before diving back into the sweet symphony of pies. I truly adore Thanksgiving; it’s a holiday that perfectly blends gratitude, family, delicious food, and cherished memories.

Art and History: The Ai Weiwei Exhibit on Alcatraz
One of the most thought-provoking and unique experiences of our trip was visiting the Ai Weiwei exhibit, “At Large,” on Alcatraz Island. This world-renowned contemporary artist’s work, set within the stark, historical confines of the former federal prison, created a powerful and poignant commentary on human rights, freedom, and confinement. The juxtaposition of modern art against the backdrop of Alcatraz’s haunting history was incredibly impactful. Exploring the different installations throughout the prison, from the cellblocks to the hospital wing, added layers of meaning to both the art and the site itself. It was a deeply moving and educational experience, highlighting themes of political imprisonment and individual liberty in a way that resonated long after we left the island.

- Zazie (Cole Valley) – The brunch at Zazie was, without exaggeration, insanely delicious and an absolute must-try. Their menu features classic French-inspired dishes with a Californian twist. From their exquisite Benedicts to their fluffy pancakes and innovative scrambles, every single item we tried was a triumph of flavor and freshness. My advice: go hungry and order a variety to share – get EVERYTHING! You won’t regret it.
- Arizmendi Bakery (Inner Sunset) – This community-owned bakery quickly became a daily ritual. Their gluten-free pumpkin muffin was so incredibly moist, perfectly spiced, and utterly divine that I ended up ordering it three separate times! Beyond the muffins, their scones are equally amazing, boasting a perfect crumb and delightful flavors that change daily. It’s a perfect spot for a quick, delicious breakfast or an afternoon treat.
- Frances (The Castro) – A true gem for farm-to-table goodness. We owe a huge thank you to Eseids for passionately insisting we dine here, and she was absolutely right! Frances offers a refined yet approachable dining experience, with a menu that highlights seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Each dish was a creative masterpiece, showcasing vibrant flavors and impeccable presentation. It’s the kind of place where every bite feels special.
- Samovar Tea (The Castro) – For tea enthusiasts, Samovar Tea is a sanctuary. I enjoyed a delightful experience here, indulging in expertly crafted tea pairings alongside my meal. Their extensive selection of high-quality teas, combined with a serene ambiance and knowledgeable staff, creates a truly elevated tea-drinking experience. Be still my heart – it was a perfect moment of calm and sophistication.
- Blue Plate (The Mission) – This neighborhood favorite impressed us with its inventive and incredibly flavorful dishes. One item that still haunts my culinary dreams is their toasted kale salad. It was so unexpectedly delicious, with a perfect balance of textures and flavors, that all I want in life is to recreate that magical dish at home. It’s a testament to their innovative approach to classic comfort food.

- Scribe Winery – As mentioned, this vineyard offers an experience unlike any other. Its incredible setting, combined with exceptional wines and outstanding hospitality, makes it a must-visit. Thank you for the wonderful service and truly memorable experience!
- Cline Winery – With its beautiful property and the added bonus of free tastings, Cline Winery provides a welcoming and enjoyable stop for any wine lover. It’s perfect for exploring a range of wines in a stunning environment without the usual tasting fees.
- Larson Family Winery – A fun and relaxed winery where you can enjoy great wines and some outdoor games. It turns out I’m far better at drinking wine than playing bags (cornhole)… but I’m not surprised, and I thoroughly enjoyed both!
Tomales Bay Seafood Experience
- Tomales Bay Oyster Company – For the freshest oysters imaginable, this is the place. The experience of shucking and grilling your own oysters right by the bay is truly special. Bring your favorite drinks and some side dishes, set up a picnic, and immerse yourself in the incredible flavors of the freshest oysters I’ve ever tasted.
