Cutting the Cord on Instagram

Reclaiming My Digital Life: Why I’m Breaking Up With Instagram

Life, in my experience, is a beautiful tapestry woven from threads of fate and free will. Some significant events feel undeniably predestined, like a cosmic alignment guiding your path. Others are purely a culmination of deliberate choices, propelled by passion and purpose. Meeting my husband, Curt, for instance, felt like destiny. Despite countless opportunities to cross paths over three years, we met on the very last possible day, exactly when we were meant to. It was a moment of perfect timing, a testament to a larger plan. In contrast, starting The Healthy Maven blog was an act of pure free will. There was no celestial decree, no inkling it was “written in the stars.” It was a choice born from a deep-seated passion, a leap of faith that blossomed into an incredible journey, teaching me lessons beyond measure. Whether by fate’s gentle hand or the determined push of free will, every single experience has profoundly shaped me into the person I am today.

Throughout this unfolding journey, I’ve always been guided by an innate sense – a gut feeling, an instinct, a sixth sense – that rarely falters, even when its whispers seemed unconventional. This inner compass pointed me towards that unassuming basement in Montreal where Curt and I first met. It urged me to purchase TheHealthyMaven.com on a crisp autumn morning back in 2012. It emboldened me to take the plunge and move to San Francisco, even through the initial month of daily tears. And it spoke to me with undeniable clarity when the time came to embark on my yoga teacher training. While this intuitive guidance hasn’t always been comfortable, and I haven’t always heeded its call, trusting it has consistently led to outcomes that felt precisely right, unfolding exactly as they should.

This brings me to today’s significant announcement – a conversation I’ve been having with myself for months, simmering beneath the surface. My gut, that ever-reliable guide, is now unequivocally telling me it’s time to embark on a significant digital detox: it’s time to break up with Instagram. But before we delve into the reasons behind this pivotal decision, let’s rewind a little.

The Evolution of My Relationship with Instagram

When I launched The Healthy Maven seven years ago, Instagram was merely a nascent platform, barely beginning to find its footing. I maintained a personal account, davida.kugelmass, where I occasionally shared blurry iPhone 4 snapshots, often adorned with peculiar filters and odd white frames, none of which had any discernible connection to The Healthy Maven. However, a few months into my blogging journey, I noticed an emerging trend: fellow bloggers were increasingly leveraging Instagram to promote their work and offer glimpses into their daily lives. I was immediately captivated. Slowly but surely, I began to share more of my own world on the platform. And it felt genuinely good. It was exhilarating to expand my community, utilizing Instagram as a dynamic platform to encourage people to visit the blog for nourishing recipes and empowering wellness advice. It also became a convenient space for sharing weekend recaps and spontaneous musings, offering a more immediate, “real-time” connection with my audience.

Back in 2013, “real-time” on Instagram truly meant real-time. The landscape was vastly different from today’s meticulously curated feeds. People weren’t yet sharing hyper-stylized images featuring flawless backdrops and impeccably coiffed hair. There was a novel charm in getting a raw, unfiltered peek behind the curtain of your favorite celebrity or emerging influencer. In fact, the term “influencer” itself hadn’t even entered our collective lexicon. I vividly recall the sheer enjoyment I derived from following along on Instagram, and I certainly wasn’t immune to the positive attention The Healthy Maven began to garner there. It swiftly transformed into a welcoming space for easy validation and a much-needed sense of community, especially during times when I felt a similar connection was lacking in my offline life. It was a powerful tool for connection and growth.

However, seven years is a long time in the fast-paced digital world. Today’s Instagram is an entirely different beast. It has morphed into a complex amalgamation of overly curated, often unrealistic portrayals of “reality” within the main feed, coupled with an almost extreme level of oversharing and “vulnerability vomit” on Stories. I must admit, I’ve played my part in this transformation. Like many content creators and bloggers, I felt an immense pressure to keep pace as the industry gravitated towards more rapid, visually striking images, often at the expense of the deeper, long-form content you find here on the blog. Despite always feeling a far more profound connection to the blog than to Instagram, the pressure to remain relevant and visible on both platforms was undeniable. And I strongly suspect I’m not alone in navigating this challenging duality.

The Identity Shift: Redefining The Healthy Maven

Over the past year, I’ve consciously felt myself creating an increasing distance between Davida (my personal identity), The Healthy Maven (my brand), and Instagram. There was a period in my life when I genuinely cherished sharing the intricate, day-to-day details of my existence. But as I’ve matured, I find myself less inclined to do so. I no longer believe it serves either me or you to broadcast every single moment of my life. This gradual shift has, understandably, precipitated somewhat of an identity crisis, as I strive to establish clearer and healthier boundaries between myself (Davida) and my business (The Healthy Maven). For many years, my identity was inextricably linked to The Healthy Maven. I shared everything. Consequently, Davida became synonymous with The Healthy Maven. But the landscape has changed significantly. Today, The Healthy Maven is no longer solely me. It’s a vibrant collective, encompassing the invaluable contributions of Tanya, Georgia, Jess, and Eilise. It’s also you – this incredible community, your inspiring stories, the wholesome recipes that nourish your families, and the cleaner beauty products you’ve discovered and embraced through our recommendations. It’s no longer about what I meticulously meal-prepped for the week or the details of Curt and my date night last Tuesday. While those personal snippets might be mildly entertaining, they are not inherently useful or truly resourceful in the way The Healthy Maven aspires to be. And that, in essence, is the profound realization that has truly resonated with me.

My overarching vision is for The Healthy Maven to be an invaluable, actionable resource for you. Conversely, I no longer desire for my personal life to be a source of entertainment for anyone other than my cherished friends and family. This distinction lies at the core of what Instagram fundamentally is: a platform designed primarily for entertainment. While it certainly allows for the sharing of recipes and helpful tips, it undeniably thrives on aesthetically pleasing images and clever, witty captions. The substantive content, the profound insights, the deeply transformative information that can genuinely help you enact significant changes in your life – the very same wisdom that has profoundly altered my own journey – has always resided, and will continue to reside, right here on the blog. This realization struck me with the force of a ton of bricks, as my gut screamed for a definitive change. It communicated to me, with absolute clarity and unwavering certainty, that it was time to embark on a long, much-needed break from Instagram.

Listening to My Gut: The Decision to Disconnect

And so, I am choosing to listen. I am wholeheartedly trusting that the intrinsic value I offer, and will continue to offer, will flourish and thrive right here on the blog and through our podcast, entirely independent of Instagram. I have unwavering faith that those who are genuinely seeking holistic tips for surviving a cold, navigating seasonal allergies, or even recovering from the challenges of SHINGLES will organically discover my work. I trust that you already know I’m your go-to resource when you’re diligently searching for the best clean foundation or an effective concealer. My sincere hope is to continue to inspire and help feed you and your families every single day, and that you’ll eagerly tune into our podcast each week, finding inspiration from new and compelling voices in the ever-evolving world of health and wellness.

Over the past year, I have been incrementally decreasing my engagement with the platform and consciously distancing my personal life from Instagram Stories. I deliberately stopped sharing every meal I prepared, the details of my weekends away with Curt, our casual hangouts with friends, and the precious, intimate moments spent with family. I’ve taken more dedicated days off from Instagram than ever before, creating a significant barrier by scheduling posts and delegating some sharing responsibilities to Tanya, allowing me crucial space to disconnect. And the results have been profoundly liberating. For the first time in my adult life, I truly feel as though I am living my life authentically for me. For much of my life leading up to the blog’s inception, I lived to please others. Then, with The Healthy Maven, my life revolved around crafting an existence for you – ensuring it was consistently entertaining, impeccably authentic, and deeply inspiring. But what I am now realizing, with crystalline clarity, is that the most authentic version of myself isn’t living her life for the approval or consumption of other people. Instead, it’s about trusting my gut when it signals the need for a transformative change. I can only hope that this courageous decision can also serve as an inspiration to you, but I am consciously releasing the need for that external validation.

Reflections on the Digital Landscape & Our Habits

Beyond my personal journey, I feel compelled to share a few broader thoughts that have been occupying my mind:

– How long will this hiatus last? Honestly, I don’t have a definitive answer. I anticipate it will be at least a couple of months, but quite possibly much longer. There’s even a possibility that I may not return to the platform at all; only time will truly tell. This uncertainty is part of the liberation.

– Why announce it? Initially, I truly considered not making any public statement (to be frank, announcing one’s departure from a social media platform can feel a bit trivial). However, I didn’t want to cause any unnecessary worry or speculation among our community. I felt it was important to address this decision directly, head-on, and reassure you all that I am doing exceptionally well, and this is a conscious, positive choice.

– Rest assured, this is not a crisis. Let me be explicitly clear: this is not a nervous breakdown, nor am I going AWOL from my professional commitments. Everything here on the blog and with the podcast will continue as usual. I genuinely adore working on both of these platforms; they are the true wellsprings of my motivation, driving me to show up and create every single day. While my direct personal presence on Instagram may be waning, The Healthy Maven blog remains my cherished platform for using my voice and sharing my work – a pursuit I wholeheartedly hope to continue for many years to come.

– Our collective addiction to social media is real. I firmly believe that our modern culture grapples with a very genuine and pervasive addiction to social media. I implore you, with sincerity, to critically evaluate your own social media usage and the content you consume. Take a moment to question whether what you’re seeing truly inspires you, or if it genuinely adds joy and value to your life. If it doesn’t, pause and ask yourself *why* it doesn’t (we can glean significant insights from our triggers), and then, don’t hesitate to unfollow. Set a dedicated social media timer on your phone and commit to strictly adhering to your allotted time. Experiment with periodically rearranging the apps on your phone so you don’t unconsciously open them out of habit. Furthermore, I highly recommend reading Irresistible by Adam Alter, a powerful book that meticulously discusses our societal addiction to technology and the profound physiological effects social media exerts on our brains.

– The business side of things. Yes, I’ve had to communicate this decision to the various brands I collaborate with, and no, the responses haven’t been uniformly positive. It has been incredibly eye-opening to witness just how seriously people perceive Instagram and the significant weight they attach to a single social media platform. I’m still navigating the complexities of sorting everything out, so it’s been a bit messy, to be completely transparent with you.

– Reclaiming my time. I am genuinely thrilled at the prospect of reclaiming the approximately two hours of my day that I typically spend on Instagram. Honestly, I don’t yet know precisely what I’ll do with all that newfound time, but the excitement of discovering those possibilities is truly invigorating!
