If you missed the first part of our adventure, catch up on our explorations in Park City, Utah, in my previous post, Where To Stay, Go and Eat in Park City, Utah! Now, prepare to be captivated as we delve into the majestic landscapes of Grand Teton National Park and the charming Western allure of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This segment of our trip proved to be an absolute highlight, offering breathtaking vistas, exhilarating activities, and culinary delights that left a lasting impression.

An Unforgettable Western Adventure: Exploring Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming

After a truly incredible week spent amidst the vibrant mountains and cultural richness of Park City, my family and I packed up our rental car, brimming with anticipation for the next leg of our adventure. Our destination: the awe-inspiring Grand Teton National Park, with a strategic overnight stop in Idaho Falls, Idaho. It’s funny how travel can lead you to unexpected places; I never imagined I’d find myself traversing Idaho, but I’m genuinely glad I had the chance to experience it, even if just for a night. This journey set the stage for an experience that would redefine our perception of natural beauty and adventure.

Grand Teton National Park: A Sanctuary of Natural Wonders

Our initial drive through Jackson, Wyoming, was merely a precursor to the grandeur that awaited us in the Grand Tetons. Yet, even that brief glimpse was enough to ignite an immediate fondness for the town. Fortunately, I knew we’d be returning to Jackson after our subsequent visit to Yellowstone National Park (which I’ll share more about next week!), providing an exciting prospect to look forward to. Of all the remarkable places we visited on this extensive trip, Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole stood out as my absolute favorites. I’d never before witnessed such majestic mountain ranges, encountered such a vibrant and culturally rich town, or experienced such a profound escape from the everyday hustle. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Wyoming, do yourself a favor and do NOT skip Jackson or the Grand Tetons. The pictures below, I hope, will convey just a fraction of their captivating allure.

Where to Stay in Grand Teton: Jackson Lake Lodge

For our two nights within the park, we chose to stay at the magnificent Jackson Lake Lodge, a decision I wholeheartedly recommend. While the rooms themselves were comfortable and well-appointed rather than extravagantly luxurious, no other accommodation in the park could possibly compete with the unparalleled views we enjoyed. It is absolutely essential to book your stay well in advance, especially if you desire a room with a direct view of the Teton Range. Watching the sunset paint the Grand Tetons in hues of orange and purple, a glass of wine in hand, surrounded by my family, is a memory that will forever be etched in my mind. The sheer beauty of that moment was truly unforgettable, offering a perfect blend of natural splendor and cherished family time.

Unforgettable Experiences: Things to Do in Grand Teton National Park

As one might expect in a place as visually stunning as Grand Teton, our days were primarily filled with hiking, and for good reason! How could one resist exploring when surrounded by such glorious sights, the calming sounds of nature, and the fresh scents of pine and earth? Beyond the trails, we also managed to enjoy some memorable time on the water, adding another dimension to our exploration of the park’s diverse offerings.

Hiking the Serene String Lake Trail

The String Lake Trail quickly became one of my favorite hikes of the entire trip. Considerably quieter and more off the beaten path compared to the bustling Jenny Lake Trails, it offered a more serene and intimate communion with nature. The scenery along this trail is simply breathtaking, with pristine lake views and dense forests. We were also treated to abundant wildlife sightings, which added to the magic of the experience. The only minor drawback was the presence of mosquitos, so remember to pack your repellent! Despite that, the tranquil beauty and rich biodiversity of String Lake make it a must-do for any visitor seeking a peaceful escape.

Floating the Legendary Snake River

Since white-water rafting is not permitted within the park boundaries, we opted for a scenic float down the iconic Snake River. This leisurely option involves sitting comfortably in a large inflatable tube, allowing you to drift peacefully downstream while soaking in the stunning surroundings. For the best wildlife viewing opportunities, I highly recommend booking your float trip for early morning or late evening. We were incredibly lucky to spot a mama moose and her baby right by the riverbank; though the baby appeared to be stuck, which was a sad sight, I continue to hope the mother managed to guide her to safety. If you plan an early morning excursion, remember to dress warmly, as temperatures can be quite chilly on the water. The scenic float provides a unique perspective of the park and its inhabitants, making it a truly memorable activity.

Jenny Lake Trail to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point

The hike along the Jenny Lake Trail, leading up to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, offered some of the most spectacular views I have ever witnessed. This trail is deservedly popular, but we found a clever way to avoid most of the crowds. Many visitors opt to take the boat across Jenny Lake rather than hiking the entire perimeter. By choosing to hike around the lake, we managed to experience the serene beauty of the early parts of the trail in relative solitude. The crowds significantly pick up around Hidden Falls, where the boat drops off passengers, and this congestion continues up to Inspiration Point. Despite the busier sections, the awe-inspiring beauty of Hidden Falls and the panoramic vistas from Inspiration Point are absolutely not to be missed. I was completely blown away by the sheer majesty of the landscape, feeling truly inspired by nature’s artistry.

Signal Mountain Summit: A Bear Sighting Bonus

During our trip, many people recommended taking the Signal Mountain Drive. While the views from the summit were decent, I personally found them a bit “meh” compared to the extraordinarily high standards set by the other overlooks we had already experienced. It’s essentially a quick 10-minute drive to the top of Signal Mountain, where you’re rewarded with a view over the valley below the Tetons. However, this experience turned out to be far from a let-down, thanks to an unexpected bonus! As we were driving back down, we spotted a black bear right by the roadside! Capturing a picture was a team effort, and if I hadn’t been concerned about being eaten alive, I would have certainly jumped out of the car to cuddle him – he was incredibly cute! This unexpected wildlife encounter proved that even a “meh” view can turn into a highlight of your trip.

Culinary Delights in Grand Teton National Park

When it came to dining within the vast expanse of Grand Teton National Park, our strategy was simple and practical. We primarily enjoyed breakfast in our room, often consisting of hearty oatmeal, and packed peanut butter sandwiches for lunch to fuel our hiking adventures. Dinner, however, was always an opportunity to explore the local culinary scene, limited as it might be within the park’s confines.

Pioneer Grill at Jackson Lake Lodge: Convenient Dining

As you can imagine, dining options are somewhat limited when you’re nestled deep within a National Park. Our lodge, Jackson Lake Lodge, offered three dining establishments: a casual grill, a bar, and a more formal restaurant. On our first evening, we opted for the Pioneer Grill. While it wasn’t a culinary experience to rave about, it perfectly served its purpose. One can hardly expect gourmet dining in such a remote location, and I certainly don’t fault them for that. My taco salad, for instance, was satisfying and did the trick after a day of exploration. It’s a reliable spot for a comfortable, unpretentious meal.

Leek’s Marina & Pizzeria: A Gluten-Free Haven

Remember how I just mentioned that dining options in a National Park are pretty limited? Well, apparently, that rule doesn’t apply to exceptional gluten-free pizza! After an invigorating 7-mile hike, we stumbled upon Leek’s Marina & Pizzeria, and I almost shed tears of joy. I ordered the Pesto Pizza with artichokes on a gluten-free crust, and I might go as far as to say it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The flavors were fresh, the crust was perfectly crisp, and the satisfaction of finding such a delicious and accommodating option in the heart of the park was immense. This hidden gem is an absolute must-visit for pizza lovers, especially those with dietary restrictions.

Discovering the Charm of Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Our journey brought us back to Jackson Hole after an exhilarating drive down from Yellowstone National Park. With only an afternoon, an evening, and the following morning before our flight home, we were determined to pack in as much as possible. Naturally, after all the extensive hiking, a significant portion of our time was dedicated to indulging in the local culinary scene – and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Jackson Hole offers a unique blend of rugged Western charm and sophisticated amenities, making it a perfect base for exploring the region or simply enjoying a vibrant town atmosphere.

Accommodations in Jackson Hole: The Historic Wort Hotel

For our stay in Jackson, we chose The Wort Hotel, and I was utterly obsessed with this place! We stayed in the “cowgirl suite,” and there was absolutely no doubt about its theme, thanks to the pervasive (and perhaps borderline suggestive) cowgirl-themed pictures adorning the walls. Despite the playful decor, the hotel managed to maintain an undeniable sense of class and Western elegance. I certainly wasn’t complaining about having a luxurious King-sized four-post bed all to myself after weeks of travel. The Wort Hotel offers a unique, immersive experience that perfectly captures the spirit of Jackson Hole, blending historical charm with modern comfort.

Exploring Jackson Hole: Activities and Shopping

Jackson Hole Farmer’s Market: A Local Gem

Upon our first arrival in Jackson, we were incredibly fortunate with our timing, coinciding with the vibrant Jackson Hole Farmer’s Market held in the town square. As a long-time admirer of farmer’s markets, I was, of course, absolutely thrilled. The market was a bustling hub of local produce, artisanal crafts, and delicious food vendors, offering a true taste of the community spirit and local bounty. It’s a wonderful place to soak in the local atmosphere and discover unique treasures.

Unique Shopping at Vom Fass

During our exploration of Jackson Hole, we managed to browse through a significant portion of the town’s charming stores. However, my absolute highlight was discovering Vom Fass, a European specialty store renowned for its exquisite olive oils and vinegars, conveniently located in Jackson. I had an absolute field day, indulging in a tasting experience and leaving with an excessive, yet thoroughly satisfying, amount of unique oils and vinegars. It’s a fantastic spot for foodies and those looking for unique culinary souvenirs.

A Taste of Jackson Hole: Dining Experiences

Lotus Cafe: A Health-Conscious Traveler’s Dream

If you find yourself in Jackson Hole, you absolutely must visit the Lotus Cafe. Seriously, go here! After nearly two weeks of relying heavily on peanut butter sandwiches, I couldn’t have been more excited to discover a healthy cafe where the entire menu could be made gluten-free and vegan. I opted for the Kimchi Soup with tempeh, and it was simply amazing – packed full of fresh, vibrant vegetables and incredible flavor. The atmosphere was welcoming and the food so satisfying that I seriously contemplated moving in! It’s a haven for anyone seeking nourishing, delicious, and accommodating meal options.

Snake River Grill: Elevated Western Cuisine

For an elevated dining experience, the Snake River Grill is an excellent choice. Their truffle fries were absolutely to die for, and frankly, most of our meals there were equally superb. I made a slight error in judgment by ordering the salmon when I should have opted for the local trout, which I later regretted not trying. While the salmon was good, it did lack a bit of the robust flavor I was hoping for. However, the side dishes, particularly the creamy mashed potatoes and the flavorful succotash, were absolutely fabulous and perfectly complemented the meal. It’s a fantastic place for a sophisticated dinner in Jackson Hole.

Moo’s Gourmet Ice Cream: Sweet Indulgences

No trip to Jackson Hole is complete without a stop at Moo’s Gourmet Ice Cream. Do yourself a favor and get the huckleberry ice cream – you can thank me later! This unique, regional flavor is an absolute delight, offering a sweet and tangy treat that perfectly caps off any day of adventure. It’s a local favorite for a reason, and a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth.

JH Roasters: The Perfect Breakfast Spot

Before heading to the airport for our flight home, we stopped at JH Roasters for breakfast, and it was the perfect send-off. Their granola was absolutely amazing, and I truly appreciated that they offered Greek yogurt, a welcome healthy option. And honestly, an iced coffee has never tasted better! The added bonus of having almond milk available made it an absolute win for my coffee preferences. It’s an ideal spot for a delicious and satisfying breakfast or a quick coffee fix before starting your day of exploration or heading out of town.

A Journey to Remember: Planning Your Wyoming Adventure

I wholeheartedly recommend making a visit to Jackson Hole and the magnificent Grand Tetons at some point in your lifetime. This region offers an unparalleled blend of dramatic natural beauty, thrilling outdoor activities, and charming Western culture. From the towering peaks of the Tetons to the vibrant town of Jackson, every moment is filled with opportunities for wonder and adventure. I know with absolute certainty that I will be back to explore more of its breathtaking landscapes and delightful offerings. Plan your trip well, immerse yourself in the wilderness, and savor every moment of this truly unique American experience.
