Planning your first visit to Grand Cayman? This comprehensive travel guide offers insights into the best activities, top restaurants, invigorating workouts, and essential wellness tips for an unforgettable trip to this Caribbean jewel.
Just a few months ago, an extraordinary invitation landed in my inbox from Camana Bay, beckoning me to the breathtaking Cayman Islands. The mission: to immerse myself in Grand Cayman’s thriving wellness scene and beyond, then share my discoveries. Naturally, I seized the opportunity, though I confess my initial expectations leaned towards a typical Caribbean beach vacation. What I encountered, however, far exceeded anything I could have imagined.
PIN THIS GUIDE TO YOUR BUCKET LIST
I’ve explored the Caribbean a couple of times before. While I can never fault the stunning azure waters and pristine white-sand beaches, none of these destinations truly felt like “bucket-list” material. Each island offered its own distinct culture and charm, yet the overarching all-inclusive resort experience often blurred into a similar memory across various remote locations. I enjoyed those trips to the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and The Bahamas, but I never felt a strong pull to return. Grand Cayman, however, is a different story entirely.
The Cayman Islands stand apart. They are, quite simply, the Caribbean at its finest. I often heard locals jest, “Grand Cayman is not a Caribbean island; it’s an island in the Caribbean.” And that sentiment resonated deeply. Stepping onto Grand Cayman felt like entering an alternative universe, a place inhabited by people who truly understand how to live life to the fullest. It’s a culture of working hard and living even harder, where the best aspects of North American vibrancy are beautifully interwoven with British charm and the lighthearted joy of island life. Here, individuals seamlessly transition from training for half-marathons to excelling in work “marathons,” and then indulging in multi-course food and drink “marathons.” A profound appreciation for life is palpable, leaving a lasting impression on every visitor.

Adding to its unique character is the significant expatriate population, which has cultivated a distinct demand for luxury and quality. In Grand Cayman, there’s no room for mediocrity; it’s luxury or nothing. If you’re willing to embrace this ethos, there is no doubt that Grand Cayman will deliver every desire and need you have for a beach vacation—and then some. It’s a destination that consistently exceeds expectations, ensuring an experience that is nothing short of exceptional.
I’ve never visited a place that resonated so perfectly with my personal philosophy on health and wellness. “Where healthy meets living” is my tagline, and it could effortlessly serve as Grand Cayman’s, with no one batting an eyelid. Being there instilled a profound sense of abundant time, or perhaps, “Cayman time.” Caymanians deeply value high-quality food, a commitment made possible by their dedication to cultivating the land despite being an island in the vast Caribbean Sea. They cherish quality time with friends and actively seek out opportunities for connection. As our host, Anna, perfectly put it, “If there’s a good time on the island, everyone will be there.” But perhaps most importantly, they understand the crucial importance of self-care. Whether it’s a serene walk on the beach, a deeply calming yoga class, or an exhilarating deep-sea dive, they recognize that pursuing pleasure and personal well-being is an integral part of a fulfilling life. This holistic approach to living left me wondering if I might just be part Caymanian at heart!
My deepest wish is for each of you to experience the magic I’ve described. My hope is that this “What To Do In Grand Cayman Travel Guide” will ignite your wanderlust and inspire your own Caymanian escape. If not for an immediate trip, then please, add Grand Cayman to your ultimate bucket list. Here’s why this island gem deserves a prime spot:
WHERE TO STAY IN GRAND CAYMAN: LUXURY ON SEVEN MILE BEACH
Grand Cayman offers diverse accommodation options, from renting a charming condo or an Airbnb to staying in a world-class hotel. However, for the quintessential Caymanian experience, I wholeheartedly recommend basing yourself on the iconic Seven Mile Beach. This famed stretch of coastline (fun fact: it’s actually about 5.5 miles long!) hosts numerous exceptional hotels, but if I were to choose just one, it would undeniably be the Kimpton Seafire Resort and Spa. I can confidently say it ranks among the finest hotels I’ve ever had the pleasure of staying in, with overwhelmingly hospitable staff who anticipate your every need. Plus, any place that offers locally brewed kombucha on tap instantly earns my profound admiration!
The rooms at the Kimpton Seafire are sanctuaries of cleanliness and comfort, each boasting its own private balcony perfect for savoring ocean breezes. The communal areas are impeccably designed, exuding an air of understated luxury whether you’re lounging by the sparkling pool or relaxing oceanside. Its convenient location puts you within easy reach of most island attractions, yet the resort itself is a destination. You could effortlessly spend your entire vacation within its elegant confines, indulging in its amenities and services. And don’t even get me started on the spa—more on that blissful experience below!
WHAT TO DO IN GRAND CAYMAN: UNFORGETTABLE ISLAND ADVENTURES
To be entirely honest, I anticipated my first visit to Grand Cayman would mirror my previous Caribbean experiences: largely confined to an all-inclusive resort, with perhaps one brief excursion. Grand Cayman proved to be nothing of the sort! Within its modest 22-mile radius, the island bursts with an endless array of activities, and as a dedicated wellness enthusiast, I felt I barely scratched the surface of what it offers. Prepare to be amazed by the diversity of experiences awaiting you.
-
Stroll Along the Iconic Seven Mile Beach
If you’re fortunate enough to be staying directly on Seven Mile Beach, this breathtaking experience is as simple as stepping out your door. If not, make sure you don’t miss the unparalleled beauty of the island’s western coastline. The soft, powdery white sand and the impossibly clear turquoise waters invite long, leisurely walks, spectacular sunsets, and endless relaxation. It’s the perfect way to start your day or unwind as evening approaches.
-
Sip a Legendary Mudslide at Rum Point
Ensure your itinerary includes a venture to the charming and slightly more secluded east side of the island. While there are options for accommodations here if you prefer a quieter escape, a visit to Rum Point Club is absolutely essential. Here, you must try one of their world-famous mudslides – a delightful, creamy concoction rumored to have been invented right here, though its true origins remain a fun mystery!
-
Explore the Vibrant Farmer’s Market at Camana Bay
Immerse yourself in the authentic flavors and local produce of Cayman with a visit to the bustling Farmer’s Market in Camana Bay. You’ll be captivated by the vibrant displays of fresh peppers (the island is particularly renowned for its potent Scotch Bonnet peppers!), ripe coconuts, crisp greens, and an abundance of tropical fruits. This is a true sensory experience, offering a glimpse into the island’s agricultural heart. Be sure not to depart without sampling some of the unique and delicious pepper jelly!
-
Swim with Graceful Stingrays and Colorful Starfish
Easily the pinnacle of my trip, this unforgettable encounter is a must-do. We arranged our tour through Red Sail Sports, conveniently located in the lobby of the Kimpton Hotel. After a short, scenic drive to the Cayman Yacht Club, we embarked on a captivating boat journey. Our adventure included swimming alongside incredibly sweet and gentle stingrays at the famous Stingray City sandbar, followed by a visit to Starfish Point to marvel at these vibrant marine wonders scattered across the ocean floor. The tour also offered a fantastic opportunity to snorkel within a thriving coral reef, oggling at the incredible diversity of marine life. Pro tip: If you’re staying at the Kimpton, take advantage of their GoPro rentals to capture stunning underwater footage of your magical encounters!
-
Energize with a Caribbean-Inspired Spin Class
Imagine Soulcycle, but with an even more infectious beat! Immerse yourself in the vibrant rhythms of Soca music—traditional Caymanian tunes frequently played leading up to and during Carnival. Check the schedule at Ryde, also conveniently situated in Camana Bay, and prepare for an ultimate, high-energy cycling experience that will leave you feeling invigorated and connected to the island’s lively spirit.
-
Encounter Turtles at Spotts Beach
Full disclosure: while we didn’t actually spot any turtles during our visit, we also didn’t venture into the water! To maximize your chances of seeing these magnificent sea creatures, don your best snorkel gear and swim off the dock. Spotts Beach is renowned as a prime location for turtle sightings, especially if you go first thing in the morning when the waters are calmest and the turtles are most active. It’s a serene and rewarding experience for nature lovers.
-
Indulge and Relax at a World-Class Spa
In need of a complete escape from reality and profound rejuvenation? Make sure to explore the exquisite spa at the Kimpton Seafire. During my visit, I experienced a Hammam purification massage that was, without exaggeration, the finest massage of my entire life. These two blissful hours were an exercise in pure serenity, an experience I wish I could relive on repeat. The spa offers a full menu of treatments designed to melt away stress and revitalize your senses in an ambiance of ultimate tranquility.
-
Embrace Serenity with a Private Yoga Class
You absolutely cannot leave the island without experiencing a yoga class led by the renowned local yogi, Janine Martins. We had our session on a picturesque island within Camana Bay, but Janine is available for private classes across the entire island. It was one of the most profoundly blissful yoga sessions I have ever encountered, perfectly complemented by cool sea breezes and gentle sun showers. Her expertise and the tranquil setting combine for a truly unforgettable wellness experience.

Attend the Prestigious Cayman Cookout (If Your Dates Align!)
This is an exclusive annual event, and by sheer chance, it coincided with our visit. Grand Cayman has earned its reputation as a premier foodie destination, attracting world-renowned chefs who frequent the island to savor its unique local cuisine. Once a year, the island proudly hosts an assembly of celebrity chefs at the Ritz-Carlton hotel for captivating demonstrations, exquisite tastings, and other extraordinary culinary events. This year’s lineup included culinary giants like Dominique Crenn (who I absolutely fan-girled over!), Anthony Bourdain, Emeril Lagasse, Eric Ripert, and many others. Before planning your next trip, definitely check the schedule to see if you can align your visit with the incredible Cayman Cookout for an unparalleled gastronomic experience.
WHERE TO EAT IN GRAND CAYMAN: THE CARIBBEAN’S CULINARY CAPITAL
What many visitors don’t realize is that the Cayman Islands are widely celebrated as the culinary capital of the Caribbean. Food enthusiasts travel here specifically for the diverse and sophisticated dining scene, which offers an impressive array of cooking styles and restaurant experiences. Caymanians embrace a “work hard, play hard” philosophy, and their passion for exceptional food and drinks is evident in every meal. During my entire stay, I did not encounter a single bad dish. Here are my top recommendations for where to indulge your palate in Grand Cayman:
-
Jessie’s Juice Bar
Without a doubt, Jessie’s Juice Bar was my absolute favorite restaurant on the island – so much so that we returned for a second visit! If you have a love for vibrant smoothie bowls, perfectly executed avocado toast, and soothing turmeric lattes, this is your sanctuary. Grand Cayman boasts three locations, but I particularly adored the one in Camana Bay for its beautiful decor, inviting outdoor seating, and extensive menu. It’s the perfect spot for a healthy and delicious start to your day or a refreshing midday treat.
-
Ave
As the primary restaurant at our hotel, Ave is a destination in itself, even if you’re not staying at the Kimpton Seafire. I highly recommend a visit! They are particularly famous for their exquisite Sunday brunch, but truly, you cannot go wrong with anything on their thoughtfully crafted menu. Ave beautifully blends traditional Caymanian flavors with beloved American favorites, offering a sophisticated yet approachable dining experience that caters to all tastes.
-
Avecita
Located within the Kimpton and serving as Ave’s intimate Spanish tapas sister restaurant, Avecita offers a truly exceptional fine dining experience. If you’re seeking to awaken your palate with inventive flavors and exquisite presentation, the chef’s tasting menu is an absolute must. We savored a phenomenal 9-course meal, with the unique privilege of watching the chef meticulously craft each creation right before our eyes. With no two menus ever exactly alike, Avecita provides a truly once-in-a-lifetime culinary journey.
-
The Lighthouse
A beloved island institution for over 30 years, The Lighthouse offers unparalleled waterfront views that complement its diverse menu. Featuring everything from fresh salads to delicious pizzas and expertly prepared seafood, there’s truly something to satisfy every craving. This is the ideal spot if you’re looking to immerse yourself in an authentic, local Caymanian dining experience with a long-standing history and charm.
-
Coccoloba
Nestled directly on the beach at the Kimpton Seafire, Coccoloba is the resort’s vibrant Mexican restaurant. It boasts impressively authentic and delicious Mexican cuisine in a breathtaking setting. Their fish tacos, in particular, were some of the best I’ve ever tasted outside of Mexico itself, packed with fresh flavors and perfectly cooked fish. Enjoy your meal with your toes almost in the sand, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves.
-
VIVO
For those seeking plant-based options, VIVO stands out as the finest vegetarian restaurant on the island. Its menu is entirely sourced from local ingredients and the restaurant itself is powered by solar energy, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainability. They offer an abundance of creative vegan options and also uniquely feature recipes utilizing lionfish—an invasive species to the islands. By ordering lionfish, you’re not only enjoying a delicious meal but also actively contributing to the local ecosystem’s health. It’s a truly conscious dining choice.
-
The Flavor Tour at Camana Bay
If you consider yourself a true foodie, this is an absolutely unmissable experience! Every Wednesday, you can embark on a guided culinary journey through Camana Bay, highlighting the absolute best gastronomic offerings the island has. The tour typically kicks off with an exquisite wine tasting at West Indies Wine, preparing your palate for a succession of delightful culinary stops. Each week’s menu is unique, so be sure to check what delicious surprises await on your chosen date.
-
Abacus
Experience Grand Cayman’s farm-to-table philosophy at its finest at Abacus. Head chef Will exemplifies this commitment by personally visiting the Camana Bay Farmer’s Market each week, ensuring all ingredients are sourced directly from local farmers and fishermen. Beyond their dedication to fresh, local produce, Abacus is incredibly accommodating to guests with allergies or dietary intolerances, ensuring a safe and delicious dining experience for everyone.
-
Gelato & Co
Without a doubt, Gelato & Co crafts the most delectable gelato on the island. Its immense popularity has even led to its expansion into several other Caribbean locations. When you visit, do yourself a favor and order the pistachio—trust me, it’s an absolute revelation! Each spoonful is a taste of pure, creamy bliss, making it the perfect sweet treat to cool down and savor the island vibes.
* * * * *
On the penultimate day of my trip, someone inquired if Grand Cayman had met my expectations. Perhaps a bit too quickly, I blurted out, “NO!” Grand Cayman was so much more profound and surprising than anything I had anticipated. My partner C and I often discuss whether we’d consider moving to places we’ve visited. While he wasn’t there to experience this journey with me, I know with absolute certainty that I would move to Grand Cayman in a heartbeat. This is a sentiment I never expected to vocalize, as I honestly didn’t think Grand Cayman would leave such a significant impression on me. I could not have been more wrong.
I will return, Grand Cayman, and next time, I promise I won’t underestimate your incredible charm and boundless spirit!
