My journey to Banff felt like a dream come true, a truly exceptional opportunity. I was incredibly fortunate to be invited by Banff Lake Louise Tourism and Food Bloggers of Canada to immerse myself in the breathtaking beauty of the Canadian Rockies for four glorious days. While the initial ask was to share my experiences on social media, the trip was so spectacular, so profoundly inspiring, that I knew it warranted a full feature on the blog. Though I traveled with five other talented bloggers, the itinerary felt uniquely tailored to my interests – a perfect blend of exhilarating adventure, serene relaxation, and, of course, absolutely incredible (and surprisingly healthy!) food. This unforgettable experience officially added Alberta to my list of potential places to call home. Let’s dive into what makes Banff such an extraordinary destination!
WHAT TO DO IN BANFF NATIONAL PARK: Unforgettable Adventures and Scenic Wonders
Banff National Park is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. From challenging hikes to tranquil paddles, there’s an activity for every type of traveler. Here are some must-do experiences that truly capture the essence of this stunning destination.
1. Hike the Hoodoos Trail
Our adventure kicked off with what we anticipated would be a gentle stroll through the enchanting woods of Banff. The Hoodoos Trail, known for its unique geological formations that resemble giant mushrooms or eroded spires, is indeed easy to navigate for most. However, our particular hike took an unexpected turn when we had a minor, yet thrilling, run-in with a bear! This prompted an impromptu ascent up a nearby mountain to ensure our safety, adding an unexpected dose of adrenaline to our day. Despite this memorable incident, the trail itself is relatively easy, making it perfect for families and beginner hikers. The scenery along the way, with panoramic views of the Bow River Valley and the iconic hoodoos set against the backdrop of towering peaks, is nothing short of spectacular. It’s an accessible way to experience Banff’s unique geological wonders and lush forests.
2. Kayak or Canoe at the Banff Canoe Club
Without a doubt, paddling at the Banff Canoe Club offers one of the most sublime kayaking experiences imaginable. Imagine gliding across crystal-clear, turquoise waters, so vibrant it almost seems unreal, with majestic, cascading mountains rising dramatically on all sides. The serene beauty is simply mesmerizing. Though our schedule allowed for only a brief outing, I could have easily spent an entire day lost in the tranquility of this place. The calm waters and peaceful surroundings create an unparalleled sense of serenity, making it an ideal activity for anyone looking to connect with nature’s quiet grandeur. Whether you’re an experienced paddler or a complete beginner, renting a kayak or canoe here provides an intimate perspective of Banff’s stunning landscapes that cannot be missed.
3. Explore Charming Downtown Banff
Even if intense adventure isn’t your primary goal, Downtown Banff offers a plethora of delightful experiences. This vibrant alpine town is a destination in itself, brimming with charming boutiques perfect for a shopping spree, art galleries showcasing local talent, and cozy cafes where you can simply relax and soak in the majestic mountain views. Foodies will particularly rejoice in the incredible dining scene – we’ll delve into that below! For those who appreciate local flavors and craftsmanship, a stop at the Banff Farmer’s Market is an absolute must. Here, you can discover fresh produce, artisanal goods, and unique souvenirs, all while enjoying the lively atmosphere of this charming mountain town. Strolling through the streets of Banff, with its unique architecture and breathtaking backdrop, is a perfect way to spend an afternoon.
4. Embark on a Townie Bike Adventure
For a leisurely yet invigorating way to explore Banff’s scenic surroundings, renting a cruiser “townie” bike from Banff Adventures is highly recommended. The town and its immediate areas boast an extensive network of bike trails, catering to all levels – from easy, paved paths perfect for a casual ride, to more challenging routes for experienced cyclists. We particularly loved our route along the serene Bow River, pausing to admire the powerful rush of Bow River Falls, before continuing our journey to the tranquil Vermillion Lakes. The Vermillion Lakes are renowned for their stunning reflections of Mount Rundle, especially at sunrise or sunset, creating photographic opportunities that are simply unparalleled. This cycling adventure provides a fantastic perspective of Banff’s natural beauty, allowing you to cover more ground than walking while still feeling immersed in the landscape.
5. Conquer the Via Ferrata at Mt. Norquay
Hands down, the Via Ferrata at Mt. Norquay was the absolute highlight of my trip to Banff. This isn’t an activity for the faint of heart, but it’s an incredibly rewarding experience that serves as an accessible introduction to mountain climbing. A Via Ferrata (Italian for “iron path”) is a protected climbing route equipped with fixed cables, ladders, and rungs, allowing you to traverse otherwise inaccessible terrain. While moderately safer than traditional rock climbing, you are still actively scaling a mountain face, secured only by a carabiner – an exhilarating feeling! The adrenaline junkie in me thrived on every second of this adventure, from the challenging ascents to the breathtaking vistas that unfolded with every step higher. The panoramic views of the Banff townsite, the Bow Valley, and the surrounding peaks from this unique vantage point are truly unparalleled and make every effort worthwhile. It’s a fantastic way to push your limits and witness the Canadian Rockies from a spectacular new perspective.
6. Ride the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain
For unparalleled panoramic views without the strenuous hike, a ride on the Banff Gondola to the summit of Sulphur Mountain is an absolute must-do. As you ascend, the glass-enclosed gondola provides a constantly evolving 360-degree vista of six mountain ranges, the Bow Valley, and the picturesque town of Banff below. At the top, a broad boardwalk leads to Sanson’s Peak, where you’ll find the Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station National Historic Site and an observation deck offering even more breathtaking perspectives. There are interpretive exhibits to learn about the area’s natural history, and even a sky bistro for dining with a view. Whether you go for sunrise, sunset, or simply a mid-day exploration, the views from Sulphur Mountain are truly unforgettable and provide a fantastic photo opportunity.

WHERE TO EAT IN BANFF NATIONAL PARK: A Culinary Journey in the Rockies
After a day filled with adventure, your appetite will undoubtedly be keen. Banff National Park boasts a diverse and vibrant culinary scene, offering everything from rustic mountain fare to sophisticated fine dining. Prepare your taste buds for an exceptional journey through the Rockies. Here are some of the standout establishments that left a lasting impression:
Sleeping Buffalo Restaurant (at Buffalo Mountain Lodge)
Conveniently located within our accommodation, the Sleeping Buffalo Restaurant at Buffalo Mountain Lodge quickly became a favorite for its exceptional food and cozy ambiance. Breakfast here offered an impressive array of options, from hearty, locally sourced bacon and sausage to lighter, healthier alternatives like fresh fruit and yogurt. It was our first dinner in Banff, however, that truly blew us away. The experience began with impeccable wine pairings, carefully chosen to complement each course – a direct route to my heart! Then came the star of the show: the perfectly cooked elk tenderloin, a true taste of the Canadian wilderness. And for dessert? The Quinoa Chocolate Cake. Yes, you read that right – a rich, decadent chocolate cake made with quinoa that was so surprisingly delicious, it made my heart sing. The service was warm, and the setting, with its rustic charm and mountain lodge feel, created a truly memorable dining experience.
Park Distillery
Park Distillery holds the unique distinction of being Banff’s first and only distillery, and it offers a dining experience as unique as its spirits. The concept here is “campfire-inspired” cuisine, focusing on rustic-comfort food that surprisingly includes many healthy and fresh options. The ambiance is stylish yet laid-back, with exposed brick and warm lighting that evokes a modern wilderness lodge. I opted for the “Hikers Bowl,” a vibrant concoction of kale, arugula, pears, blueberries, trail mix, and a refreshing yogurt vinaigrette. Of course, in the spirit of “YOLO,” I quickly balanced it out with a midday Caesar cocktail and a slice of their famously delicious cornbread. Park Distillery is the perfect spot for a casual yet memorable meal, where you can enjoy handcrafted spirits and hearty food in a lively atmosphere right in the heart of Banff.
Juniper Hotel Bistro
It was love at first sight with The Juniper Hotel. The decor immediately transported me to a scene out of a sophisticated Mad Men era, with its mid-century modern aesthetic and chic, inviting atmosphere. But it was the view from the patio that truly stole my breath away – a sweeping panorama of the Bow Valley and its majestic peaks, so stunning that I would have been content even if they’d served me dirt! Fortunately, the culinary experience matched the scenery perfectly, delivering one of the finest meals I had in Banff. I indulged in the delicate and flavorful Sablefish, followed by a divine chocolate tart for dessert. Every dish was meticulously prepared and beautifully presented, reflecting the high quality and fresh ingredients that define the Juniper’s menu. I left wishing I could have sampled every item on their exquisite menu.
Cliffhouse Bistro (at Mt. Norquay)
Perched high atop Mt. Norquay, the Cliffhouse Bistro provided the perfect spot for some much-needed sustenance after our exhilarating Via Ferrata excursion. The unique setup of the bistro, with its modern design and incredible mountain vistas, created a truly memorable dining environment. We shared a delicious charcuterie board, packed with a selection of cured meats, cheeses, and accompaniments, which hit just the right spot after our strenuous mountain climb. While I was absolutely ravenous from scaling a mountain, and perhaps there wasn’t quite enough to fully satiate my post-adventure hunger, I happily made up for it by indulging in a substantial amount of their tasty chips. No regrets! The combination of the stunning location and satisfying snacks made this a highlight.
Block Kitchen + Bar
During our townie bike adventure, we made a delightful stop at Block Kitchen + Bar for what I’d describe as a “tour de bouche” – a little taste adventure! To be honest, I was still quite stuffed from my earlier meal at Park Distillery, but the bite I had of their lettuce wrap was absolutely delicious and incredibly fresh. Block Kitchen + Bar exudes a cool, casual vibe with a vibrant, energetic atmosphere, making it a popular spot. Its central location in Downtown Banff means you’re right in the middle of all the action, perfect for a quick snack, a refreshing drink, or a full meal. Based on that delicious bite and the lively ambiance, I’d confidently recommend it for solid, tasty food and a great downtown experience.
Fairmont Banff Springs
As soon as you lay eyes on the Fairmont Banff Springs, often referred to as “The Castle in the Rockies,” its grandeur and magnificence are immediately apparent. It truly feels like a medieval fortress nestled amidst the rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies. This iconic hotel boasts an astounding 16 restaurants, offering a culinary journey for every palate. We chose to dine at their Indian Summer-inspired location, and the food was outrageously good – rich, aromatic, and perfectly spiced, it was a feast for the senses. The scenery, as expected from such a landmark, was breathtaking, with stunning views from every window. The only slight drawback was the service, which was a bit subpar, resulting in a dinner that felt exceptionally long. However, the sublime food and the awe-inspiring setting made it an experience worth savoring, despite the wait.
…and that view!

Buffalo Mountain Lodge
Our four-day stay at Buffalo Mountain Lodge, courtesy of Banff Lake Louise Tourism, was nothing short of exceptional from the moment we arrived. The staff were incredibly accommodating, ensuring every aspect of our visit was seamless and comfortable. From thoughtfully providing bear spray for our hikes (an essential detail for exploring the wilderness!) to offering endless helpful directions, their attentiveness and hospitality truly impressed me. We were fortunate to stay in their Premier Rooms, which perfectly blended rustic charm with modern comfort. Each room felt like its own private cabin, featuring cozy fireplaces – ideal for chilly mountain evenings – and private balconies that offered a peaceful spot to enjoy the crisp alpine air. However, the bathroom was the ultimate indulgence. The magnificent claw-foot tub became my nightly ritual, a luxurious soak that melted away the day’s adventures. I nearly teared up when I discovered bath salts thoughtfully placed by our tubs, a small but significant touch that spoke volumes about their attention to detail. The lodge’s design, with individual cabin-like rooms just a short walk from the main lodge where meals were served, created a sense of secluded tranquility without feeling isolated. Its strategic location meant we could easily walk to the Hoodoos Trail or enjoy a pleasant 15-minute stroll into Downtown Banff. Nothing felt too far away. I wholeheartedly and highly recommend Buffalo Mountain Lodge for an authentic, comfortable, and truly memorable stay in Banff National Park.
