Health The Wealth Money Can’t Guarantee

Note: This piece stems from a deeply personal space, and I confess to a degree of trepidation in sharing it. My foremost intention is to foster thoughtful reflection, not judgment. I fully acknowledge my own privileges and the inadvertent ways I may have contributed to the very issues I aim to address. My goal is to empower you, my cherished community, to hone your critical thinking skills and discern what genuinely resonates with your individual path, rather than to critique the choices of others. I humbly ask that you approach this read with an open mind and a spirit of inquiry.

It would be disingenuous to suggest anything less than profound affection for my profession. I genuinely adore it – with an intensity that often surprises even me. Each day unfolds as an opportunity to delve into the vast, intricate world of health and wellness, experimenting with diverse practices and concepts, and subsequently sharing these insights and personal journeys with you. My role allows me to engage in meaningful conversations with leading figures and innovators in the wellness space, exploring their stories on my podcast. This platform has blossomed into a source of innumerable opportunities, none of which I ever take for granted. While I certainly experience days grappling with overwhelm or a lack of motivation, the desire to pursue an alternative career path has never surfaced. Launching this blog was, without exaggeration, a pivotal moment that irrevocably transformed my life and professional trajectory.

Yet, as this digital space has expanded and my initial hobby gracefully transitioned into a full-fledged career, my awareness of the inherent responsibilities accompanying such a platform has deepened exponentially. I’ve always held a nuanced relationship with the term “influencer,” finding it somewhat reductive. However, the undeniable truth is that when one chooses to share their life online, an intrinsic form of influence is exerted upon those within their orbit. This community, whether vast or intimate, carries with it a profound expectation: that what is shared is not only authentic and truthful but also delivered with a keen understanding and deep respect for the audience it reaches.

My intention here is not to reprimand or cast judgment upon those who might not strictly adhere to these principles. The multifaceted nature of truth means that it manifests uniquely for each individual. While I personally harbor reservations about numerous practices prevalent within the health and wellness sector – particularly the often-unhealthy tenets of diet and “fitspo” culture – it is not my prerogative to unilaterally declare them erroneous. The very definitions of “right” and “wrong” are fluid, constantly shifting with evolving understanding and perspective.

Instead, my primary objective is to convey a vital message directly to you – my community, my cherished readers. I wish to engage in an honest dialogue about the prevailing landscape of the health and wellness sphere, and my growing concern that it is inadvertently evolving into a stratified, privilege-based system. Simultaneously, I am here to openly admit my own complicity, acknowledging that I am, in some ways, part of the very problem I’m describing. It is my sincere hope that through this candid self-reflection, you might gain a clearer understanding of instances where judgment may have been unintentionally cast, or where you might have inadvertently contributed to the fragmentation of the wellness movement.

The Indisputable Truth: Health is Our Greatest Asset

First, the foundational truth: health is wealth. This assertion is beyond dispute. When you experience optimal health, you possess the capacity to awaken each day energized and able to pursue both your obligations and your aspirations. This might entail dedicating yourself to your career, nurturing your children, or immersing yourself in a revitalizing yoga class. Conversely, when confronted with illness, chronic conditions, addiction, or persistent pain, these fundamental activities become significantly challenging, if not entirely impossible. Even if manageable, they often come at a substantial personal cost. Health is an invaluable gift, never to be taken for granted, and it unequivocally merits its position as one of our paramount priorities in life.

Challenging the Narrative: Why Wealth Should Not Dictate Health

However, it is equally crucial that health does not become synonymous with wealth. My contention here spans two critical dimensions. Firstly, the healthcare system within the United States is, in my view, profoundly flawed. As someone born and raised in Canada, this stark reality is glaringly apparent. While I readily acknowledge that the Canadian system is far from perfect, the sheer financial burden imposed for access to essential healthcare services in the US is nothing short of absurd. I am fortunate enough to possess the means to afford adequate coverage, and I unequivocally recognize the immense privilege this affords me. Yet, it remains an astounding paradox that financial solvency often dictates access to fundamental health needs. No individual should ever be forced into the agonizing dilemma of choosing between their well-being and fulfilling other essential life expenses. Nevertheless, pragmatic advice dictates: please ensure you are adequately covered. Health is inherently unpredictable, and gambling with it is a risk too profound to take.

Beyond the systemic issues, what I primarily wish to discuss is the pervasive influence of money on our individual wellness decisions. So many of us, myself undeniably included, often overlook the inherent privilege embedded in seemingly simple acts: paying for a specialized yoga class, purchasing high-quality organic vegetables, or investing in the latest “superfood” powder or revolutionary supplement. We accept these as normal expenses within the wellness sphere without truly pausing to consider the financial implications for a broader segment of the population.

The Fine Line: Perks vs. Essentials in Wellness

Indeed, I am very much an active participant in this ecosystem, and I make no attempt to conceal my fondness for my adaptogenic elixirs and stylish yoga attire. I personally integrate many of these products and practices into my own life, and professionally, a component of my role involves their promotion. As you are aware, I endorse only those items I genuinely love and believe in. However, it is paramount that I unequivocally state: I do NOT consider any of these specific products or practices to be absolute essentials for achieving or maintaining good health.

Consider the accessibility of wellness: you can engage in a deeply beneficial yoga practice using only your body and the floor of your own bedroom. A nutritious breakfast can be as simple and satisfying as a bowl of cereal, offering valid energy without the need for an elaborate, expensive green smoothie. Your daily coffee ritual can remain pure and invigorating, entirely devoid of added MCT oil, exotic mushroom blends, or any other avant-garde additions. You can embrace all these simpler approaches and still achieve and sustain optimal health. These trending items and classes are, at best, enriching “perks” or enhancements; they should never be conflated with the fundamental requirements for well-being.

The Weight of Influence: A Call for Conscious Sharing

It is precisely for this reason that I meticulously curate what I choose to share regarding my personal workouts or the products I’m currently experimenting with. I am acutely aware that my platform grants me a certain level of influence, and my personal choices can, directly or indirectly, shape yours. This principle holds true whether one engages with an audience of half a million readers or merely two close friends. Your decisions inevitably ripple outwards, impacting those around you. This isn’t about withholding truth; rather, it’s about diligently ensuring that I never inadvertently create feelings of inadequacy or financial strain for anyone who may not have access to the same resources or privileges that I enjoy.

My earnest appeal is for YOU to activate your critical thinking faculties when encountering content depicting practices such as elaborate shamanic healing protocols or routine cryotherapy sessions. Let me be clear: I am not asserting that any of these modalities are inherently harmful or without potential benefit. My central point is that these extravagant interventions are simply not *necessary* prerequisites for achieving or sustaining a state of health. You are, of course, absolutely encouraged to explore and experiment with new practices that genuinely intrigue you. In fact, I wholeheartedly advocate for self-discovery! However, this exploration should never come at the expense of significant financial strain, nor should it divert precious time and energy from the pursuits you truly cherish or the responsibilities you genuinely need to fulfill.

Embracing Your Enoughness: The Power of Fundamental Wellness

Remember this profound truth: If you consistently prioritize getting eight hours of restorative sleep, you are enough. If you embrace the simple yet powerful act of going for a daily walk, you are enough. Even if your chosen path involves specialized and perhaps unconventional treatments like daily bee-venom injections, you are enough. Regardless of where you currently stand on your personal wellness journey, and irrespective of the practices you adopt or forgo, you are inherently and unconditionally enough.

It is vital to cultivate a deep awareness that everyone is navigating their own unique and intricate life journey. Therefore, please refrain from passing judgment on the stages others find themselves in, or on the resources and opportunities they either possess in abundance or tragically lack. Crucially, resist the urge to compare your individual path and progress to anyone else’s. Such comparisons are often the thief of joy and contentment, fostering only discontent.

Let us collectively re-center our focus on the foundational pillars of well-being: prioritize adequate sleep, practice mindful breathing, ensure consistent hydration, nourish your body with wholesome vegetables, and extend boundless compassion both to yourself and to those around you. And, naturally, let’s continue the crucial conversation about accessible, equitable healthcare – but that profound discussion, perhaps, is best reserved for another day and another discourse!
