A recent weekend escape to Montreal perfectly encapsulated everything I adore about this magnificent city: abundant sunshine, stylish hats, delicious peanut butter M&Ms, and the serene joy of simply unwinding in its beautiful parks. This vibrant metropolis consistently beckons, offering a unique blend of old-world charm and modern energy. My most recent visit spanned a mere 48 hours, yet we managed to immerse ourselves in a whirlwind of activities, adding more cherished memories to our ever-growing Montreal bucket list.
As a proud alumna of McGill University, every return to Montreal is steeped in a profound sense of nostalgia. It’s been precisely three years since I walked across the graduation stage, and walking through the familiar streets brought back a flood of cherished memories from my student days. Yet, this trip also served as a reassuring reminder of the growth and accomplishments I’ve achieved since earning my degree. It’s a testament to how some places, like Montreal, continue to shape you long after you’ve left.
Discovering Montreal: A Comprehensive Travel Guide & Culinary Journey
Beyond simply recounting the highlights of my recent getaway, I felt compelled to share some of my absolute favorite spots and experiences in Montreal. This guide is tailored for anyone contemplating a visit to this incredible city in the future. And, as you might expect, many of my top recommendations revolve around one of life’s greatest pleasures: food! Montreal’s culinary scene is an epicurean paradise, a delightful fusion of French sophistication, global influences, and local innovation that never ceases to impress.
A Rainy Start & A Hilarious Evening
My adventure began with a long, anticipation-filled train ride into Montreal. Unfortunately, the city greeted me with a rather significant downpour, which quite literally threatened to dampen our initial plans. However, the momentary gloom quickly dissipated. My spirits were lifted the moment I settled in with a glass of wine – yes, wine at the Bier Markt, an unconventional but delightful choice! – before heading out for a wild night at the movies. We caught “Neighbors,” which turned out to be absolutely hysterical, the kind of comedy that leaves your sides aching and tears streaming from laughter.
Montreal’s Vibrant Brunch Scene: A Morning Must-Do
The following morning, with the rain cleared and spirits high, we kicked off our day in true Montreal fashion: with a phenomenal brunch. We met up with friends at Lawrence, a truly exquisite dining establishment renowned for its inventive and delicious brunch offerings. The atmosphere is always lively, and the dishes are crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients, making it a perfect start to any Montreal day. Their commitment to local sourcing and seasonal menus shines through in every bite, transforming classic brunch fare into an elevated culinary experience.
Montreal boasts an incredible array of brunch spots, each with its unique charm and flavor. Beyond Lawrence, some of my other perennial favorites include: Chez Jose, a beloved casual spot known for its hearty, comforting dishes and vibrant, no-frills ambiance; Beauty’s Luncheonette, a legendary diner that has been serving Montrealers since 1942, famous for its classic breakfast plates and nostalgic charm; and Bagels Etc, where you can savor delicious, freshly baked bagels alongside traditional diner fare, all with a distinct Montreal flair.
From Habs Heartbreak to Happier Hours: Montreal’s Nightlife
Following our delightful brunch, we spent the afternoon bouncing around Montreal, eventually settling in to watch the local hockey heroes, the Canadiens (Habs), face off against the Rangers. It was a tough game for a Habs fan to watch, as they were unfortunately crushed. The collective disappointment in the air was palpable, and I certainly drowned my sorrows – quite effectively, I might add – in a few Bloody Marys. Despite the loss, the energy of watching a game in Montreal, even from a bar, is an experience in itself, a testament to the city’s deep passion for hockey.
Montreal’s nightlife offers an eclectic mix of atmospheres, from cozy, intimate pubs to vibrant, bustling bars. When I’m looking to unwind or socialize, a few places always come to mind. Else’s is a perennial favorite, known for its relaxed vibe and friendly crowd, making it perfect for a casual drink and good conversation. Mme Lee offers a chicer, more sophisticated setting with expertly crafted cocktails, ideal for a slightly upscale evening. And for those seeking a unique experience, Big in Japan Bar provides an intriguing speakeasy ambiance, hidden behind an unassuming door, where exquisite drinks and an intimate setting create an unforgettable night.
A Vegetarian Feast & Montreal’s Healthy Eateries
After an afternoon of emotional hockey and a few Bloody Marys, I found myself absolutely ravenous for dinner. My craving led me to Burritoville, an incredible vegetarian Mexican restaurant where I admittedly went a bit overboard with their delicious tacos. Burritoville exemplifies Montreal’s growing commitment to diverse culinary options, proving that healthy and plant-based eating can be incredibly flavorful and satisfying. Their vibrant menu, fresh ingredients, and creative interpretations of Mexican classics make it a standout choice for vegetarians and omnivores alike.
While Montreal is rightly famous for its indulgent culinary delights – think poutine and smoked meat – it also boasts an impressive array of healthy and plant-based dining options, catering to every palate and dietary preference. For those seeking nutritious and delicious meals, I highly recommend: Aux Vivres, a pioneering vegan restaurant that has been serving innovative and flavorful plant-based dishes for years, from classic burgers to vibrant bowls; Cafe Santropol, a charming and eclectic spot famous for its enormous, creative sandwiches and beautiful garden patio, offering a refreshing escape in the heart of the city; and Crudessence, a raw food establishment that takes plant-based cuisine to an art form, crafting delicious and nutritious meals entirely from uncooked, unprocessed ingredients, perfect for a truly healthy and revitalizing experience.
Revisiting My Roots: McGill University Campus
No visit to Montreal would ever feel complete without a pilgrimage back to the campus of my alma mater, McGill University. This institution holds a truly unique position, sprawling as a massive university in the very heart of a bustling metropolis, yet somehow managing to retain the most glorious, expansive fields and green spaces. These serene oases provide students with the perfect escape, allowing them to lay out on the grass, study, socialize, or simply chill between classes, soaking in the vibrant campus atmosphere. It’s a remarkable juxtaposition: urban energy meeting academic tranquility.
Of course, this idyllic scene is most prevalent during the warmer months, as Montreal’s winters mean that for approximately eight months of the year, these very fields are blanketed in snow, transforming the campus into a picturesque winter wonderland. The architecture of McGill, a stunning blend of historic stone buildings and modern structures, stands as a testament to centuries of academic excellence and innovation. Its rich history, impressive faculty, and diverse student body contribute to its global reputation as a leading educational institution. For me, walking through its gates evokes a profound sense of pride and belonging, solidifying its place as not just a university, but a cherished home. And let me be clear: when it comes to favorite schools, for me, no other institution truly compares.
Mont Royal & The Rhythmic Heartbeat of Tamtams
Many visitors are surprised to learn that Montreal is, in fact, built around a mountain – the iconic Mont Royal. This majestic urban park serves as the city’s green lung, offering breathtaking panoramic views and a serene escape from the urban hustle. During the summer months, the park transforms into a vibrant cultural hub, particularly around the monument dedicated to George-Étienne Cartier. This area becomes the stage for “Tamtams du Mont Royal,” an unofficial yet deeply beloved weekly gathering.
Every Sunday, the park pulsates with the rhythmic sounds of drums, attracting a diverse crowd of drummers, dancers, artists, and picnickers. It’s affectionately known as “Tamtams,” and while it might appear to be a gathering for the “crunchy granola” crowd, it’s an event that truly draws in the entire spectrum of Montreal society. Locals and tourists alike flock to Mont Royal to experience this unique phenomenon, enjoying the music, the vibrant community spirit, and the sheer joy of a beautiful day outdoors. With such glorious weather gracing our visit, there was absolutely no chance I was going to miss out on the unparalleled energy and communal celebration of Tamtams. It’s an essential Montreal experience, a truly authentic glimpse into the city’s artistic and free-spirited soul.
The Quintessential Tastes of Montreal: Smoked Meat, Bagels, and My Secret Favorite
No culinary journey through Montreal would be complete without delving into its legendary food scene, specifically its iconic bagels and world-famous smoked meat. However, before we get to those classics, allow me to introduce you to my personal, somewhat controversial, pick for the best sandwich in Montreal: the camembert on an arepa from Bocadillos. I’m well aware that I might have just gotten myself into trouble with that declaration, as most Montrealers (and visitors) would undoubtedly crown the Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich from Schwartz’s Deli as the undisputed champion. And indeed, Schwartz’s smoked meat, piled high on rye bread with mustard, is undeniably epic, a tender, flavorful masterpiece that melts in your mouth and has earned its legendary status. The unique spice blend and slow smoking process create a flavor profile unlike any other, making it a mandatory stop for any food lover.
Then there are the bagels. Oh, Montreal bagels! While New York has its own famous version, Montreal bagels are a distinct category unto themselves, baked in wood-fired ovens, hand-rolled, and boiled in honey water before baking, resulting in a slightly sweet, dense, and chewy interior with a crispy, golden-brown exterior. The bagels from Fairmount Bagel, in particular, are utterly delicious and embody everything that makes Montreal bagels so special. Regardless of what anyone else might argue, for me, nothing – absolutely nothing – compares to the unique taste and texture of a freshly baked Montreal bagel. They are more than just a breakfast item; they are a culinary institution, a symbol of the city’s rich gastronomic heritage. Whether you prefer them plain, with cream cheese, or as part of a sandwich, they are an essential part of the Montreal experience.
Reflections and the Enduring Allure of Montreal
And now, as I type this, I find myself on the train back home with C, watching “The Avengers” and reflecting on a truly memorable weekend. It’s often easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget how profoundly important it is to intentionally carve out time where your attention is fully, unequivocally focused on the ones you love. This trip was a powerful reminder of that necessity – to detach from routines, silence the digital noise, and truly be present.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have disconnected and made the absolute most of our precious time in a city that has, and always will, hold a very special place in my heart. Montreal’s unique blend of cultural richness, historical depth, and vibrant modernity consistently captivates me. Despite all the fun, the delicious indulgences, and the joyful explorations, I am also looking forward to getting home, getting back on track with my routine, and giving my body what it’s craving most after a weekend of culinary adventures: a generous dose of fresh, vibrant veggies! Until next time, Montreal!
