New Orleans isn’t just a city; it’s an experience, a vibrant tapestry woven from centuries of history, diverse cultures, and an undeniable spirit that captivates every visitor. For years, this iconic destination sat proudly at the very top of my U.S. travel bucket list, a place I dreamed of exploring. When a unique opportunity arose—a work trip for my partner, C, coinciding with his birthday—it felt like destiny. We seized the chance to extend our stay, adding a few extra days to immerse ourselves in NOLA’s legendary charm and uncover what makes it truly special.
Before our arrival, neither of us truly knew what to expect. We’d heard whispers of Mardi Gras revelry, the lively bachelorette parties, and a music scene unlike any other in the world. Yet, what we discovered far surpassed these preconceived notions. New Orleans unfolded before us as a city of unparalleled depth and character, a place that defies easy categorization.
Trying to compare New Orleans to any other city feels almost impossible. It possesses the romantic allure of Paris, the vibrant energy of Vegas, the laid-back charm of Miami, and the spirited warmth of Dublin, all blended into an extraordinary fusion. If that sounds difficult to imagine, it’s because it truly is. New Orleans is a destination that demands to be experienced firsthand to be understood. And even after our intensive 72 hours, we felt we had only just begun to scratch the surface of its endless wonders.
I’m thrilled to share every detail of our whirlwind 72-hour adventure in New Orleans. If you’re contemplating a visit, let this guide be your definitive sign: go. Seriously, pack your bags and go. I can confidently promise you a journey filled with unforgettable moments, incredible flavors, and rhythms that will stay with you long after you’ve left.
WHERE TO STAY IN NEW ORLEANS: Finding Your Perfect NOLA Home Base
Choosing the right accommodation can significantly enhance your New Orleans experience, offering a sanctuary amidst the city’s lively atmosphere. During our visit, we had the pleasure of staying at a hotel that perfectly blended comfort, style, and an ideal location.
International House – Our stay at the International House proved to be the quintessential home base for our NOLA exploration. Its location is truly unbeatable, situated just two blocks from the vibrant French Quarter. This proximity meant we were within easy walking distance of New Orleans’ most iconic attractions, yet far enough removed to enjoy peaceful nights and a restful sleep away from the non-stop buzz. The convenience of being able to step out and immediately immerse ourselves in the city’s energy, then retreat to tranquility, was invaluable.
The hotel’s amenities were outstanding, adding an extra layer of luxury to our trip. We were particularly smitten with our penthouse view, which offered breathtaking panoramas of the New Orleans skyline – a spectacular sight day or night. The International House consistently hosts engaging events; during our visit, a Havana Whites party transformed the lobby into a vibrant Cuban-inspired extravaganza, complete with elegant decor and an infectious energy. The hotel itself is decidedly trendy, boasting a hip ambiance without sacrificing functionality or comfort. It struck the perfect balance between style and substance, making it utterly “our kind of place.” From the attentive staff to the beautifully designed spaces, I have nothing but high praise for the International House.
While the International House was perfect for us, New Orleans offers a diverse range of accommodations. Consider charming boutique hotels in the French Quarter for a truly immersive experience, historic bed-and-breakfasts in the Garden District for a taste of Southern elegance, or modern hotels in the Central Business District for proximity to various attractions and amenities. Whatever your style, NOLA has a place for you to call home.
WHERE TO VISIT & WHAT TO DO IN NEW ORLEANS: Iconic Experiences and Hidden Gems
New Orleans is brimming with activities and sights, each offering a unique glimpse into its soul. From historic streets to melodic venues, here’s how to maximize your 72 hours in NOLA.
The French Quarter: A Journey Through Time – When most people conjure images of New Orleans’ legendary revelry, their minds drift to the French Quarter. While it’s true that this historic district is home to the infamous Bourbon Street, it’s also much, much more. The French Quarter is the vibrant epicenter of New Orleans’ rich history, cultural evolution, and architectural beauty. To truly grasp its significance, a deep dive into its past is essential.
We highly recommend taking the Historic French Quarter Walking Tour. This guided experience illuminates everything from the Quarter’s origins in the 18th century, through its fascinating transitions of control from French to Spanish, and finally to American hands. You’ll wander cobblestone streets, marvel at iconic iron lace balconies, and discover hidden courtyards. Learn about the diverse influences that shaped the architecture, cuisine, and customs of this unique neighborhood. Beyond Bourbon Street, you’ll find cultural treasures like Jackson Square, with its magnificent St. Louis Cathedral, and countless street performers—musicians, artists, and fortune-tellers—who breathe life into every corner. This tour provides context and appreciation for the district’s profound heritage, showing you that the French Quarter is a living museum, far beyond its party reputation.
Take a Bike Tour: Pedal Through NOLA’s Neighborhoods – This activity was, without a doubt, one of the highlights of our trip. New Orleans is a city of manageable size, making it perfectly suited for exploration on two wheels. A bike tour offers an incredible perspective, allowing you to cover significant ground and truly appreciate the distinct character of its various neighborhoods. Our guide, Jonathan, was fantastic—a true local expert who led us on an engaging journey through the city’s winding streets. He expertly wove together history, local anecdotes, and cultural insights, delivering fascinating tidbits about New Orleans at every turn. We pedaled through diverse areas like the Marigny, Bywater, and Treme, witnessing everything from vibrant street art to historic shotgun houses, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the city’s layout and its people. It’s an active and immersive way to connect with the city beyond the main tourist hubs.
Immerse Yourself in the Music Scene: The Soul of the City – New Orleans is synonymous with music, the very birthplace of jazz, and its melodies permeate every street corner. While we were fortunate enough to be there during the Bayou Boogaloo festival, if your visit doesn’t coincide with a major event, don’t despair. A pilgrimage to Frenchmen Street is an absolute must. This iconic stretch of road, just outside the French Quarter, is where you’ll find authentic New Orleans jazz clubs, blues venues, and funk bands playing late into the night. The atmosphere is electric, filled with locals and visitors alike, dancing and reveling in the unparalleled talent. But honestly, music in New Orleans isn’t confined to specific venues; it’s everywhere. From impromptu brass bands on the street to solo guitarists in quaint cafes, a soundtrack accompanies you throughout the city. The caliber of musicianship is astounding; we could have spent an entire day just soaking in the incredible sounds emanating from the buskers in the French Quarter. This city truly lives and breathes music, offering an auditory feast unlike anywhere else.
Shop on Magazine Street: A Treasure Hunter’s Paradise – For those who love to shop, or simply enjoy browsing unique boutiques, Magazine Street is a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of the French Quarter. Stretching for six miles from Jackson Avenue to Louisiana Avenue, this eclectic street is lined with a fantastic array of independent shops, art galleries, antique stores, and charming cafes. We particularly enjoyed exploring the numerous antique shops, brimming with vintage treasures and one-of-a-kind finds, and the adorable local clothing boutiques offering styles distinct from mainstream retailers. It’s a fantastic place to pick up unique souvenirs or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll. My wallet, however, didn’t share my enthusiasm quite as much after discovering so many tempting items!
Explore the Garden District: Grandeur and Southern Charm – A walk through the Garden District feels like stepping onto a movie set—and indeed, many films have been shot amidst its stunning backdrop. This neighborhood is characterized by its opulent 19th-century mansions, stately oak-lined streets, and meticulously manicured gardens, creating an atmosphere of old-world Southern grandeur. The architecture here is truly breathtaking, showcasing various styles from Greek Revival to Italianate, each house telling a story of prosperity and elegance. To fully appreciate its rich history and cultural influence, consider taking the Historic Garden District Tour. You’ll learn about the prominent families who built these homes, the area’s development, and even pass by famous residences, including those belonging to celebrities. It’s a peaceful, picturesque contrast to the lively French Quarter and offers a glimpse into a different facet of New Orleans’ charm.
Take a Boat Tour: Cruising the Mighty Mississippi – My personal travel philosophy dictates that if a boat tour is an option, you seize it. It’s one of the most enriching ways to gain a new perspective on a city and its surroundings! In New Orleans, we embarked on the Steamboat Natchez Dinner Jazz cruise, and it was a memorable experience. While I’ll be honest that the food left a bit more to be desired, the views—especially the sunset over the city skyline—were absolutely incredible. Cruising down the mighty Mississippi River aboard a historic steamboat, with the gentle rhythm of the paddlewheel and a fantastic live jazz band playing away, created a truly magical atmosphere. It was the perfect, quintessential New Orleans way to celebrate C’s birthday, providing a blend of history, stunning scenery, and captivating music.
WHERE TO EAT IN NEW ORLEANS: A Culinary Journey for the Senses
New Orleans’ culinary scene is legendary, a flavorful fusion of Creole and Cajun influences that tells the story of its diverse heritage. I arrived with high expectations for the food, but I was utterly unprepared for just how exceptional it would be. It seemed every street corner offered either a venerable, century-old institution serving time-honored dishes or a chic, contemporary restaurant pushing the boundaries of NOLA’s rich gastronomic traditions.
A quick note for my fellow “green juice-salad-bar-loving hippies”: the New Orleans food scene isn’t particularly “healthy” in the conventional sense. However, I passionately believe that when in New Orleans, you absolutely must “do the thing you’re supposed to do.” So, I happily set aside any search for an Acai Bowl (if one even exists!) and instead fully embraced the opportunity to indulge in traditional Creole and Cajun delights. After all, YOLO (You Only Live Once), especially when facing a plate of authentic New Orleans cuisine!
Napoleon House: A Taste of History – Our culinary adventure began at the historic Napoleon House, a true institution in the French Quarter. Here, I experienced a moment of pure culinary bliss when I tried their Shrimp Remoulade-stuffed Avocado—it was so good, I nearly shed tears of joy! C opted for the alligator po’boy, which he declared absolutely delicious. Beyond the food, we were treated to a private tour of the upstairs, originally built in 1812 for Napoleon Bonaparte himself, though he never made it to the city. The building exudes an old-world charm, with its dimly lit bar, classical music, and a palpable sense of history in every corner. It’s an ideal spot to savor a Pimm’s Cup, their signature cocktail, and truly soak in the ambiance of a bygone era.
Arnaud’s: Classic Elegance with a Jazz Soundtrack – Dining at Arnaud’s was a truly classic New Orleans experience, elevated by the enchanting presence of a live Jazz band. From the moment we stepped into its opulent dining rooms, we were transported to an era of refined elegance and impeccable service. We indulged in the potato soufflé, a delicate and savory starter, followed by the perfectly baked oysters. For our main courses, we split the rich shrimp creole and the exquisite Pompano Duarte, each dish a testament to Creole culinary mastery. We were fascinated to learn that some of the recipes have been cherished and perfected for almost a century, contributing to the restaurant’s storied legacy. The service was nothing short of extraordinary, reminiscent of a five-star Parisian establishment, making our meal at Arnaud’s a truly unforgettable occasion that celebrated both history and gastronomy.
Kingfish: Modern NOLA Flavors, Unforgettable Meal – Without a doubt, Kingfish delivered our favorite meal in New Orleans. The food here was simply out of this world, offering a contemporary twist on traditional Southern flavors. We started with a beautifully curated charcuterie board, followed by a refreshing apple and fennel salad. For our main courses, we shared the delicious fish tacos and the catch du jour, which featured fresh summer squash and tender artichokes. Every bite was a symphony of flavors, expertly prepared and presented. Kingfish offers a more modern dining experience compared to some of the city’s historic institutions, yet it flawlessly incorporates traditional New Orleans seafood with innovative techniques. The ambiance is lively but sophisticated, making it a perfect spot for an exceptional meal that I know I won’t soon forget. If you go to NOLA, make sure Kingfish is on your list!
Commander’s Palace: Legendary Jazz Brunch – I had never experienced a 3-course brunch before, and Commander’s Palace was the perfect place to try it for the first time. This iconic Garden District restaurant is famous for its legendary Jazz Brunch, an institution in itself. I appreciated that they offered an “Eat Fit” option for those seeking healthier choices, and I happily opted for the Spring Granola for my first course and the Spring Frittata for my second. However, I also fully indulged in Lolly’s Praline Parfait, which was hands-down one of the best desserts I’ve eaten all year. Yes, we had dessert with breakfast, and my life will never be the same! The entire experience was accompanied by a lively Jazz band strolling through the dining rooms, creating an incredibly festive atmosphere. The service was, as expected, absolutely first-class, making Commander’s Palace a truly memorable and indulgent brunch destination.
Beignets: The Sweet, Powdery Delight – No trip to New Orleans is complete without indulging in beignets, the city’s iconic powdered sugar-dusted fried dough. Everyone in New Orleans has a strong opinion about where to find the absolute best. An overwhelming number of people championed Café du Monde, our bike guide highly recommended Morning Call Coffee, and the NOCVB advocated for Café Beignet. While I’m fairly certain all fried dough generously covered in sugar tastes amazing, we ultimately chose Café Beignet. The line was manageable, and the charming café vibe was just right. And yes, the beignets were phenomenal—light, airy, and utterly delicious. Be warned, though: no one told me not to exhale out of my nose when eating them, leading to a hilarious (and very powdery) mishap!

Coffee: Fueling Your NOLA Adventures – To complement the sweet decadence of beignets, a good cup of coffee is essential in New Orleans, a city with a rich coffee culture, often featuring chicory. An overwhelming number of locals recommended trying French Truck cold brew coffee. We found it at G & O Food Company, and it truly lived up to the hype—smooth, rich, and perfectly refreshing. We also stumbled upon Spit Fire Coffee, a charming coffee shop with an inviting vibe and an excellent Yirgzu cold brew drip. These spots provide the perfect pick-me-up before a day of exploration or a moment of calm reflection amidst the city’s vibrant energy.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TO NEW ORLEANS: Practical Tips for a Smooth Trip
To ensure your 72 hours in New Orleans are as enjoyable as possible, here are a few practical considerations to keep in mind:
Embrace the Heat and Humidity! – As a Canadian, I can confidently say that New Orleans’ heat and humidity are unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. We visited in May, just as the hot season was beginning, and even then, the combination often necessitated a midday two-hour nap to recharge. Apparently, it wasn’t even considered “hot” by local standards! If intense heat isn’t your preference, consider visiting during the cooler months (late fall to early spring). Otherwise, be prepared: hydrate constantly, wear light and breathable clothing, plan indoor activities for the hottest parts of the day, and embrace the afternoon siesta.
Getting Around New Orleans – Navigating the city is surprisingly easy. Yes, Uber is readily available and proved to be an incredibly cheap and convenient way to get around, especially when you need to cover longer distances or are heading out late at night. For a more authentic and charming experience, hop on the historic streetcar. Our hotel was only a few blocks from a streetcar stop, making it a picturesque and affordable way to travel between the French Quarter and the stately Garden District. Walking is also a fantastic option, particularly within the French Quarter and along Magazine Street, allowing you to discover hidden gems at your own pace. The city is very walkable, and public transport is reliable.
A Note on Bourbon Street – You might notice the conspicuous absence of Bourbon Street from my list of recommended places to explore. Perhaps it’s my age, or perhaps I’ve become too accustomed to a “Netflix and Chill” lifestyle, but Bourbon Street, for all its fame, held zero appeal for me personally. While you’ll undoubtedly find yourself walking through parts of it during your French Quarter exploration, unless you’re specifically seeking an extremely rowdy, no-holds-barred party experience filled with questionable decisions you hope to forget, I wouldn’t hesitate to skip dedicating significant time to it. The Historic French Quarter Walking Tour will provide you with fascinating insights into Bourbon Street’s history—its origins, its evolution, and its place in New Orleans lore—which is far more compelling than witnessing fishbowl margaritas and tossed beads three months after Mardi Gras. There are many other, more authentic, and culturally rich ways to experience New Orleans’ vibrant nightlife, particularly on Frenchmen Street.
Safety Tips: Like any major city, it’s wise to be aware of your surroundings. Stick to well-lit, populated areas, especially at night. Keep an eye on your belongings, and if venturing out for a late night, consider using rideshares or taxis. The French Quarter and Garden District are generally safe for tourists, but vigilance is always recommended.
Beyond 72 Hours: While this guide focuses on a packed 72 hours, New Orleans has so much more to offer if you have a longer stay. Consider taking a thrilling swamp tour to see alligators and local wildlife, exploring historic plantation homes outside the city, or delving deeper into its museums like the National WWII Museum or the New Orleans Museum of Art. Every extra day reveals another layer of this incredible city.
Even after describing our packed itinerary, I still feel as though I haven’t fully summarized the true essence of New Orleans, because there truly is something indescribable about this city. Its magic isn’t just in its sights or tastes, but in its very atmosphere—a captivating blend of resilience, joy, and a deep-rooted cultural pride. It’s a place you genuinely have to experience for yourself to believe.
If you’re searching for a vacation filled with rich history, stunning architecture, phenomenal food, captivating music, and an infectious, high-energy vibe, New Orleans is undoubtedly for you! It’s a city that invites you to shed your inhibitions, embrace the moment, and truly “let the good times roll!”
