My Dog: The Single Best Decision for My Well-being

Life has a funny way of throwing us delightful curveballs, sometimes furry, four-legged ones that demand attention at ungodly hours. I first began contemplating this very post last year, shortly after our initial months of fostering the incredibly sweet Rhett. For those curious, there’s an update on Rhett’s journey at the conclusion of this article!

Fast forward to today, and I’m a week and a half deep into the whirlwind of puppy training with our newest family member, Bodhi. Amidst the charming chaos, the thought has crossed my mind more than once: was getting a dog truly the best decision for my personal well-being?

Despite the abrupt 3:00 AM wake-up calls, the relentless chewing on anything within reach, and a brief, unwelcome encounter with giardia, I harbor no lingering doubts. I firmly believe that once this adorable little troublemaker is fully trained and settled, I will wholeheartedly reaffirm my conviction: dogs are, without a shadow of a doubt, a direct gateway to experiencing optimal health and happiness.

As I meticulously craft these words, Bodhi is currently nestled beside me in bed, lost in the captivating world of puppy dreams. Witnessing his peaceful slumber, filled with gentle twitches and soft whimpers, I honestly cannot conceive of anything that could possibly bring me more profound joy and contentment right now.

I vividly recall a particular morning spent with Rhett, taking him for a walk amidst a biting cold winter blizzard. As someone who genuinely despises winter, being compelled to rise before dawn and venture outdoors is far from my ideal activity. Yet, when a dog’s gotta pee, there’s simply no debating it.

Despite any internal grumbling about the frigid air or the early hour, I knew deep down that Rhett was the sole reason I was up, dressed, and outside, rather than indulging in my usual third round of hitting the snooze button. I glanced over at him, watching as he bounded through the snow with unadulterated glee, utterly oblivious to the piercing cold and the encroaching darkness. He dug enthusiastically through the frozen earth, unearthing his coveted treasure: a simple stick. In that moment, all I could think about was the sheer beauty of witnessing life’s most profound, simple pleasures unfold directly before me. Suddenly, my frozen eyelashes and icicle-cold toes faded into insignificance. My attention was entirely captivated by this authentic, pure display of joy. This profound realization made me keenly aware of how significantly my life had transformed since bringing a dog into it, and perhaps more importantly, how much healthier I felt – both physically and mentally – after expanding our little family.

Of course, Rhett has since reunited with his loving mom, and we are now diligently immersed in Bodhi’s training journey. Yet, every single insight and truth I uncovered in that initial instant remains profoundly relevant. Welcoming a dog into my life was, without exaggeration, one of the most impactful and beneficial decisions I have ever made for my holistic health and happiness.

Here are the compelling reasons why:

1. Dogs Ignite Your Morning Routine: The Unstoppable Alarm Clock for Better Health

Let’s be honest, I am inherently not an early bird. Given my druthers, I’d happily sleep until 10:00 AM every single day. However, this luxurious habit simply isn’t a viable option when you have a canine companion. While there are certainly moments I yearn for a lie-in, having a pup has become an invaluable catalyst, compelling me to spring out of bed, get dressed, and embark on my day as a far more productive human long before my old self would even contemplate hitting the snooze button. This forced early start has created a beneficial domino effect: initiating my day earlier means I can often wrap up my work by 5:00 PM, creating a healthier work-life balance. Furthermore, as much as I appreciate the comfort of my pajamas, I made a solemn vow never to be one of those dog moms who takes their furry friend out in an old sweatsuit. Now, I have a legitimate, joyful reason to present myself as a relatively fashionable human, rather than resembling a contestant on “What Not To Wear.” This subtle shift in routine not only aids in physical preparedness but also boosts my mental readiness for the day ahead, cultivating a sense of order and accomplishment from the very start.

2. They Are Your Personal Guides to the Great Outdoors: Embracing Nature for Wellness

Regardless of whether the sun is shining brightly or rain is pouring down, your dog’s needs ensure you’re stepping outside. When I’m not traveling, I confess I’m quite the homebody. My friends are well aware that if they wish to see me, it typically needs to be within a four-block radius of my apartment. Yet, with a dog, I am happily compelled to venture outdoors, even when my natural inclination is to remain comfortably burrowed within my apartment’s cozy confines. One of the most straightforward, yet profoundly effective, actions you can take for your overall health is simply to step outside and deeply inhale the fresh air. This daily ritual with a dog offers an essential dose of natural light, vital for Vitamin D synthesis and regulating circadian rhythms, which can significantly improve mood and sleep quality. It also provides a much-needed break from screens and indoor stressors, fostering a sense of calm and connection with the natural world, regardless of the weather. These regular excursions become mindful moments, grounding you in the present and reminding you of the simple beauty of your surroundings.

3. Dogs Champion Your Fitness Journey: Movement, Mindfulness, and Motivation

My dogs, both Rhett and now Bodhi, have completely redefined my perspective on exercise and physical activity. There are often days when my schedule feels impossibly packed, leaving insufficient time to hit the gym, complete my work, and dedicate a proper walk to the dog. This constraint has necessitated a fundamental change in how I approach and integrate exercise into my daily life. Nowadays, the majority of my cardio comes from either brisk walking or, on occasion, an invigorating jog alongside my dog. I still prioritize short, intense gym sessions for quick HIIT workouts or weight-lifting to maintain strength. However, with an already limited number of hours in the day for dedicated workouts, adding extensive cardio on top of these sessions isn’t always feasible. In essence, having a dog has not only ensured I move more frequently but has also helped me to move more intuitively and functionally. It’s not just about burning calories; it’s about purposeful movement, exploring different terrains, and engaging muscles in varied ways. This natural integration of activity makes exercise feel less like a chore and more like an enjoyable, integral part of daily life, significantly contributing to improved cardiovascular health, flexibility, and endurance.

4. The Ultimate Priority-Setting Coaches: What Truly Matters in Life

No matter the daunting length of my to-do list, the unwavering truth is that my dog’s well-being must always be prioritized. I am, by nature, someone who attempts to cram a million tasks into a single day, and without firm boundaries and limitations to ground me, I would relentlessly strive for a level of productivity that is genuinely impossible to sustain. Having a dog has been an invaluable teacher in the art of saying “no” to opportunities that don’t genuinely ignite my passion, simply because I no longer have the endless time to commit. I wholeheartedly prefer to be out on a rejuvenating walk with my dog, soaking in the moments, rather than toiling away on a project I know I won’t truly enjoy or find fulfilling. This shift in perspective fostered by dog ownership cultivates a greater sense of intentional living, reducing stress and burnout by forcing me to consciously allocate my most precious resource – time – towards activities that genuinely nourish my spirit and contribute to my overall happiness and mental health. It’s a constant reminder that some things, like unconditional companionship and shared moments, are far more valuable than a perfectly cleared inbox.

5. Your Furry Personal Trainer: Incidental Strength Training with a Puppy

I believe I ascended and descended our stairs at least 12 times yesterday, all while carrying Bodhi in my arms (who, at nine weeks old, already weighs a formidable 16 lbs – lord help me!). I can almost guarantee that I’ll develop formidable “Mom arms” by the time puppy training is complete. This seemingly simple act of carrying a growing puppy is, in fact, an incredible form of incidental strength training. It engages your core, works your biceps and triceps, strengthens your back, and improves your balance. From scooping them up for cuddles to navigating stairs or simply holding them while they explore, these daily interactions provide consistent, functional resistance. It’s exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise, seamlessly integrated into the loving care of your pet, helping to build practical strength and endurance without ever stepping foot in a gym or even picking up a traditional dumbbell. These small, consistent efforts compound over time, leading to tangible improvements in physical fitness and overall body strength.

6. An Abundant Wellspring of Unconditional Love and Comfort: Nurturing Mental Health

There are inevitably days when I feel utterly swamped by stress and overwhelming demands, and in those moments, there is truly nothing quite like the soothing embrace of a puppy cuddle or a cascade of enthusiastic doggy kisses to make everything feel instantly better. While my baseline stress levels still run relatively high, they have undeniably experienced a significant and welcome decrease since welcoming a pup into our lives. The presence of a dog offers an unparalleled source of emotional support and companionship. Scientific studies consistently show that interacting with pets can lower cortisol (the stress hormone), reduce blood pressure, and increase the production of oxytocin, often referred to as the “love hormone.” This constant, unconditional affection acts as a powerful buffer against loneliness, anxiety, and depression, providing a consistent source of comfort, joy, and a sense of belonging. Their unwavering loyalty and simple need for affection remind us of the profound beauty in giving and receiving love, bolstering our mental and emotional resilience day after day.

7. Shifting Focus: From Self-Preoccupation to Empathetic Connection

I confess, I have a tendency to become a little too internally focused, dwelling on my own concerns and perceived imperfections when, in reality, I’d be far better off directing my attention towards something beyond perpetually trying to “fix EVERYTHING.” Caring for another sentient being inherently forces you to transcend your bad hair day, that unwelcome acne breakout, or whatever fleeting stressor du jour might be occupying your mind, especially when a tiny, vulnerable creature is utterly dependent on you for their very survival. This shift in perspective is incredibly liberating. Moreover, the unwavering affection from my dog serves as a profound lesson in self-acceptance: he loves me unconditionally, even with unexpected zits on my face and a wild afro on my head, so why on earth wouldn’t I extend that same loving acceptance to myself? This empathetic responsibility cultivates a deeper sense of purpose, reduces self-preoccupation, and fosters a more outward-looking, compassionate approach to life, ultimately enriching one’s own sense of self-worth and well-being.

8. Your Personal Adventure Guides: Unlocking New Worlds and Discovering Local Gems

True story: I had genuinely forgotten that I even lived on a lake until I got a dog. The moment you bring a dog into your life, you suddenly develop an insatiable desire to explore every nook and cranny of your own neighborhood and venture far beyond. After treading the same familiar walk 200 times, the natural human (and canine) inclination is to seek out new sights, sounds, and smells. Furthermore, you naturally want your dog to experience the ultimate adventures, which motivates you to constantly seek out novel places to explore together. We are so incredibly excited and eagerly anticipating the day Bodhi is old enough and robust enough to join us on exhilarating camping trips and long, winding hikes through nature. These explorations aren’t just for the dog; they open up new avenues for personal discovery, foster a deeper connection with your local environment, and provide countless opportunities for creating cherished memories through shared outdoor experiences, enhancing both physical activity and mental rejuvenation.

Undoubtedly, acquiring a dog isn’t the ideal choice for everyone, but for me, it was precisely the transformative experience I needed. I find myself significantly more productive (despite the current, albeit temporary, sleep-deprived state I’m in), far more active, and blessed with a profoundly renewed perspective on what truly holds importance in life. Welcoming Rhett, and subsequently Bodhi, into our family felt akin to receiving a daily dose of green juice, a blissful yoga session, and a perfectly crafted avocado toast all rolled into one delightful package. It’s an everyday infusion of wellness, joy, and purpose.

If you find yourself seeking a compelling reason to increase your activity levels, are prepared to embrace a more flexible schedule, and are utterly open to receiving an endless supply of unconditional love, then perhaps considering bringing a puppy into your life might be the perfect next step for you!

And for those of you who have been wondering about Rhett, rest assured, he is absolutely thriving! As many of you already know, we had the immense pleasure of fostering him for nine wonderful months while his beloved mama (who also happens to be my best friend) diligently completed medical school. He is now happily reunited with her, and we are fortunate enough to see him several times each week, ensuring our bond remains strong. Furthermore, we are currently enjoying the company of his feline brother, Obi Wan Kenobi, before he embarks on his big move to Edmonton next week.

In the interim, we are utterly immersed in the delightful process of getting to know Bodhi’s burgeoning personality. While raising a puppy is undeniably no easy feat, filled with its unique set of challenges and triumphs, we could not be more profoundly in love with him! And, because we all inherently know that I primarily wrote this entire post as an elaborate excuse to bombard you with an overload of irresistible puppy pictures, here they are, for your viewing pleasure!
